Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly is due to appear on World Cafe this week. If your local NPR station carries World Cafe, could you please tape this for me? I can do a B&P or download it. TIA. :) /nm ------------------------------ From: h Grape Minkoff Subject: Hiss reduction Reply-To: the_GrapeMan@yahoo.com Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 09:02:22 -0700 (PDT) From: "Chris" I've been using Cool Edit Pro 2.0 to try to get rid of the hissing while keeping the original music as pure as possible. I've had best results using the noise reduction tool but the only problem is after I do the reduction it adds a tinkling kind of noise to the background almost like chimes or something. Thanks! Chris ================ Try processing smaller chunks of the wav files. The chime noises are errors, but I find that there are less errors when CoolEdit has smaller tasks. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Anyway I was just wondering > if anyone out there knew any better tools or methods to reduce hiss > without adding more annoying noise or if the tape is pretty much junk. > > Thanks! > Chris > Well, it's really not possible to do major noise reduction without adding the tinkling or other annoying artifacts. You should try doing less noise reduction and restrict it to higher frequencies (most annoying hiss is in the higher frequencies, above about 7500khz. The simple truth is that these higher bands can't be filtered without removing part of the sound you want to keep. Something I've tried with limited success is do a series of small noise reductions. So you would find a quiet part of your recording and get a noise profile. Then do a small reduction based on that profile - for the most part, this will give you minor hiss reduction without adding artifacts. Go back to the same quiet part of the recording and get another profile, then do another reduction based on the new profile. Repeat as many times as you want to. Yes, this takes a long time, but the results will be a little better. You should look at your recording in spectral view and see if the hiss is stronger in certain frequency bands and use an eq filter (like the notch filter) to reduce those bands. You will lose part of your source, but it won't add artifacts and will definitely reduce the hiss. If it's like tape hiss, forget it, it will be in all bands...good luck. ------------------------------ From: Matthew Thayer Subject: Again, too much .... stg ........ Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 22:02:38 -0400 According to a story in the San Francisco Chronicle, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen are having reunion shows this Friday and Saturday night at 19 Broadway Niteclub, 17 Broadway, Fairfax. It won't be a full reunion like the one a few years ago-- drummer Lance Dickerson passed away a few months ago, and Bill Kirchen is touring in Australia, but apparently the rest of the old gang will be there. John Tichy's son Graham, who's been on the road recently with Wanda Jackson and Robert Gordon, will sit in Kirchen's place. Anyone taping? Would love to trade for these two shows... _________________________________________________________________ Check out MSN PC Safety & Security to help ensure your PC is protected and safe. http://specials.msn.com/msn/security.asp ------------------------------ From: Eduardo Malvido Subject: Zoltrix Nightingale pro 6 sound problem, need advise Date: Thu, 15 Apr 2004 23:18:11 -0700 (PDT) Hello board I recently bought a Zoltrix Nightingale pro 6 card Im on XP, the CD supplied has only W2K drivers, I installed them and got a freezed PC.
