can anyone point out a link that has good info on how
to get into SHN, FLAC and other losless formats? seems
more and more traders are leaning this way.
thanks

Subject: taping live storytelling help, please
Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 07:09:34 -0700 (PDT)
I have been taping live storytelling events, and am
not entirely happy with the results. I was hoping for
some advice from the community.
The events usually take place in a small venue (i.e.
the room holds a couple of hundred people), with one
SM58 microphone for the storyteller, who is on stage.
There is a basic PA system, usually two speakers
mounted by the stage.
When the soundperson has allowed me to tape directly
from the board, the storyteller sounds great, but the
audience responses are very quiet, obviously. There is
also a violin player who sits on the side of the stage
to play warning sounds when the storyteller goes to
long. She is not miked and is barely audible through
the SM58.
So the last time I taped, I put a AKG C414 over the
shoulder of the violinist (cardiod mode), pointed
toward the audience. The SM58 ran through CH1 on the
house board, and the 414 ran through CH2. I recorded
the two tracks separately onto my DAP-1 (off the
board), with the thought that I could adjust the
levels independently later in ProTools.
The result was that the audience and violin were
audible through the 414, and the storyteller was
audible through the SM58. There was slight phase
difference, which (I think) I adjusted in ProTools.
Overall, the recording sounded better than it did when
just the SM58 was used.
Intuitively, I feel like I am doing the wrong thing,
but I'm not sure why. If you had a DAP-1, 2 C414's, an
SM58, the house board, and maybe another mic (0f
unknown origin), at your disposal; how would you make
this recording? What would you do in post-production?
Gary Davis?
My apologies for the long email. Private/public
responses would be appreciated.

Hey heads.
I have 2 excellent "taping" seats for the Yes show at the Greensboro Coliseum tues the 27th. If anyone in the area is interested, drop me a line. I'm on the road this morning at 3 am, so get in touch quick! (At the very least I could use help getting gear in to the show.)
I've made it to 2 shows already and if this kind of thing is your bag, then don't miss the chance to see 'em. It's a quick US tour and will be over in blink.
Thanks for the space!

Hey heads.
I have 1 more excellent "taping" seat for a show I can't make. This one is David Bowie at the Star Pavilion in Hershey , PA. The seat is in section C row 4, right near the PA. If you're good at it, I can guarantee a great tape could come from there.
Plenty of time on this one. I'm opting for the Yes Show at MSG on the same day. Someone here please take this and go to the show before I have to sell the ticket the annoying way. Price was $78.85 but I'll let it go for less if you are ready to tape.
Thanks again for the space! This should be the last one I can't make it to out of of about 30 shows I had to preorder tickets to early in the year before all the dates were ironed out.

Thinking of selling my long loved capsules, I've made some really nice tapes
with these, see http://www.posthorn.com/S_mk41vg.html for a little more info
from the schoeps about them for those who are not familiar with the
capsules...They pull some amazing magic at times deep in the room, or under
a covered ampitheater...I am the second owner, and have had them for almost
3 years now...The list on them is $1079 per cap new, but I will be willing
to negotiate a good price for these off list...Thanks, Aloha,
