It was from a Lilith Fair show in 1997 (Washington State I believe). Many people have a sense of space - invade it, accidently (and repeatedly) tap their feet, breath repeatedly on their necks/ears with hot moist breath, etc. Many of these work except with the very drunk. Cup your ear and/or lean in their direction like you are trying to listen to their conversation. Many at shows are not even aware tapers are there even when you are running open. Point at the mics when they look your way. Chuck Quinn ------------------------------ From: michael ryan Subject: Check out this HOT Band ! Date: Mon, 10 May 2004 11:46:56 -0700 (PDT) Hey Now All! Just got back from a less than perfect vacation. Diane and I went down to N.C. for MerleFest and saw some great music. Alas, I was not able to get anything on tape, but,I will be working on getting some of the shows through a Humboldt barter/trade. We were also not able to get to any of the Little Feat shows due to the fact we were pretty much captive in the hills with a friend who went on a depression drunk. Long story but not worth the bandwidth. ANYWAY... I HIGHLY recommend getting out and catching a band from here in Humboldt named Kulica. This is a very taper friendly and a high energy groove group. If you get there early to set up your gear or just get there early, get in touch with the mandolin player, Jason Hodel or the lead guitar/vocalist or bass player, Curtis & Julie Thompson respectfully who are also husband/wife. Please let them know that you heard about them from me. Tapers, this might get you in free!!! ( It just depends on how hungry they are ) They do have a web site, it is < Kulica.com > go figure %^}. Anyway they are doing their first muti-state tour. They have have been highly received both here locally and in Hawaii. Also they have opened for some very excellent bands and both Jason and Julie have really impressed bands like Little Feat, their manager really was impressed with them and gave the whole band a big thumbs up, Leftover Salmon, David Crosby and even Merle Haggard. I know I have sent out a couple of their shows to folks on this list and I hope that you all will get out and support this up and coming group. They are worth the time, money and tape. If anyone tapes this excellent band, please LMK as I am trying to archive as much of their music as possible. I will send blanks, disc or DAT, to all who help me with this endevor. Thanks for reading this and if you think you know of a club that they can play, please give the band or me a shout. Peace, Michael __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Date: Tue, 11 May 2004 13:24:43 +0900 Howdy, I will post this here bec I know a lot of you MN tapers lurk this list--and who knows if somebody else cares. Slim Dunlap is a national treasure who spent some time with Curtiss A, driving around in the Replacements' rusty old truck, and still graces the stage at the venerable Turf Club the last Saturday of every month almost almost without fail. I taped him for four years running there with about 95% consistency, and it's a great little archive of a great little rock band. Now I live in Japan and the torch is going out. I want to find a Slim taper! Rob at the soundboard has a nice feed, two PZMs on the ceiling and a monaural track from the board makes a sort of pseudostereo recording that varies from passable to stunning. Plug in your soundblaster on your old IBM laptop! Anything is better than no document at all of this great $4 show. Drop me a line if you can tape Slim at least sometimes, and burn me a flac. I'll buy you a beer by paypal! Looking forward to some reply.
