Well Candace thanks for that conclusion. but I don't think anyone has ever
asserted your right to blab on your cell phone during a movie. Its a flat
out wrong analogy, we're talking music performances not a film. A better
analogy would be a sporting event. No one should be allowed to stand up
and cheer because it might interfere with my digital photos, right? So far
as I know, its a long held tradition at rock and rave and noise shows to
get rowdy and party up, not sit like a submissive mouse. That I want to
document it is nice but why should everyone have to be silent so I can
record? We could go through each genre of music but although I may be
assuming, I interpreted most of the problems people discussed on this list
to be at rock type shows. Its a different culture.
Don't people dance at your bluegrasss shows? And yell and yip and sing
along? They don't sound like much fun to me.
cheers
Jim
Simply purchasing a ticket does
not give someone the right to act like a complete ass. That's like saying
that
just because someone has bought a movie ticket they can talk on their cell
phone or loudly point out all the plot of the movie before each scene. If
just
purchasing the ticket gives someone the right to do whatever they want,
then I
have the right to turn around and duct tape their mouth shut, or whap them
over the head with a mic stand. Let's see who comes out on top then!!! Loud
talking is one of the reasons that as I get older I appreciate folk and
bluegrass shows a lot more; people come to actually listen, instead of talk
about their day at work and how badly their lover is treating them blah blah
blah.
Cheers

Hey all:
Cowboy Junkies have just released a new CD and are going back out on the road.
First up are some European dates, then some American dates later in the
summer. I already have some volunteers, but I want to have two tapers at every
show. At most shows, I will be able to put you on the guest list +1. There
might be some where I will only be able to get you 1 ticket. Mic stands are
allowed, and you are usually allowed to tape from anywhere in the venue.
Sometimes the venue security will push you back, but FOB is usually fine. If
you are interested, please shoot me an email listing what equipment you have.
In exchange for getting guest listed, you will send me a copy of the show.
Please note, some of these dates are co-billed with Shawn Colvin, and I'm not
sure about taping at those. I think it will be OK to tape the Junkies then,
but I doubt Shawn will give permission. If that is the case, please don't ruin
this by stealthing Shawn.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Candace

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has compared the qiant squid
cardiod mics with the batt box...to the sound sound cards with batt box?
Both look exactly the same...but one is $80 and one is $250
What's the difference? are the core-sound mics really $170 better?
What do you guy's think?
Thanks in Advance!

'Sup, brothas.
So... I got a <> of taper tix in the Phish mail order lottery. I have
4 to 6/19 SPAC, 2 to 6/20 SPAC, 4 to 8/10 Boston, and 4 to 8/11 Boston. I'm
looking to trade any or all of these, in groups or potentially as singles
(considering the right seats, of course) for some real tasty close seats. If
any of you out there got some great 15th row or under tix in the lottery (or
get them when they go on sale this weekend) and require a tapers' ticket,
I'm your man. And afterwards, perhaps we shall FTP or B+P some tapes if the
mood is right...
Thanks,
Jake

I would imagine that Giant Squid does not perform the mods to the
capsules themselves that Core-Sounds does to theirs. They probably both
base their mics on the Panasonic WM-61A capsules, but Core-Sounds does
some work with them to open up the inlet a bit and also (I think) adds
an attenuator to prevent overloading the front-end on portable decks
(the WM-61A is a "hot" capsule--even at low bias voltages). Core-Sounds
does market an inexpensive line of mics that differ from their regular
line only in that they have not had the mods performed. These would
probably be comparable to the Giant Squid mics, but I am not certain the
Giant Squid uses the WM-61A capsules.

With concert behaviour atrocity stories flying around, I thought I'd share
mine, for I'm still traumatized and seething.
And it had all started out so promising... late April in N. Europe…Spring
had set in with its usual severity…with only a few hardy souls venturing
out, the sparsely-filled old church would surely have killer acoustics from
its flagstone floor and high vaulted wood ceiling. And I'd even bribed the
manager to switch off the noisy airco by offering a vanity tape of his ugly
flute-playing daughter.
But the best laid schemes o' mice and men gang aft agley…for my heart sank
when the gang of three waddled in: Hell's grannies, in full regalia - blue
rinse, rouged cheeks, dainty handkerchief in blouse-sleeve, and already
grumpy faces from finding no Mozart or Bach on the programme. Ignoring my
pleas, they plonked themselves down in the first row slap bang under my
mics. The wheelchair one even had the gall to park out in the central
aisle, in kicking distance of my stand, muttering about the inaccessibility
of the fixed pew seats (a lame excuse). I explained calmly my
concerns...how the 1 + cos@ pick-up pattern of the cardioids, the inverse
square law and Fletcher-Munson would conspire to make them drown out the
cello...and their off-axis-distorted yakking getting indelibly embedded in
the reverberation tails. But to no avail, for they greeted me with an
insolent stare of feigned incomprehension.
Needless to say, that first half was disaster city: Nr 1, the stand-kicker,
had a nasty Pavlovian throat-clearing reflex every moment the conductor
raised his hands for the start of a piece; Nr 2 was an inveterate too-early
applauder, and a gratingly noisy page-turner (not content with following
the song texts in the programme, she'd even brought along her instrumental
sheet music!); Nr 3 was a sort of quartermaster, drip-feeding her mates
with an endless stream of peppermints and rustling wrapped candies. Cooped
up in a side room a long cable run distant, I was powerless to nip all
these shenanigans in the bud with a disapproving glare or my usual whisper
of admonition, "will you please shut the F*** up you pre-metamorphic,
post-menopausal, antisocial little toad" (I've got that down pat in four
languages, but to tell the truth, I was squeamish about using a swear word
in a sacred place lest the Great Tonmeister zap my transformerless Schoeps
with a retributory thunderbolt).
Sometimes I could salvage things at the intermission. Unerringly effective
for me - but only advisable on our side of the pond, with its less
developed culture of litigation - had been to single out the ringleader and
head-butt her ('pour encourager les autres'). But in this case the old cow
had brought her body armour, in the form of ugly outsize Billie Jean King
spectacles.
So it goes...another blemished recording. You know, I'd be less ticked off
if I could just attribute such fiasco's to an innate ignorance of certain
folks. After all, I did read recently an incredible statistic that there
are actually still zillions of people on our planet whose only experience
of a lossless propagation of pure beautiful music through multiple
generations is, well...birdsong!. The mind boggles. But in the case of
those three doozies, no way was that ignorance! That was wanton
obstructionism, sheer audio vandalism.
Like Seinfeld said, "People are the worst".

Hi,
A friend who is new to taping just got a minidisc recorder and needs some
mics.
He wants some that he can clip on his shirt collar. He doesn't have a lot of
money, but I remember seeing a bunch of stealth mic sets going for $300 or
less on here recently. If anyone has any mics for sale, please contact me.
Also, if you know of any new stealth mics that are a good deal for the money,
I'd love to recommend those to him as well.

unacceptable.....Maynard is an artist.....and good one, he deserves

happened to them the previous night.....thats a different story. I actually
like hearing people talking on my recordings.....to an extent. But those
stupid miserable drunks with nothing better to do than get drunk, go to a
