The best way to erase magnetic tapes completely without causing undue
headwear on rare species of tape machine would be to get a "bulk
eraser." This is a powerful electromagnet which emits an alternating
flux at close distance. Switch it on, and rub your tapes up and down
it's business end, and they will be BLANK- De-Gaussed, empty, without
ABS time, and ready to re-use. Simple and Easy.
The other options are to run it through a DAT machine and record blank
space (digital zeroes?) on the tape, or to simply record over the
previous material. If you decide not to erase, just make sure to run a
blank leader at the head and tail of reused tapes to help you avoid
confusion.

John-
You can just record directly over whatever is already on the tape. There
are also two ways to erase it, if that makes you feel better. The first way
is to just turn your input level control all the way down and record silence
on the tape, thus erasing it.....although doing this will leave a timecode
on the tape (counter will read time if you play back the tape), and put
additional wear and tear on the deck. The "right" way to do it is to buy
what is called a "bulk tape eraser".....this is nothing more than a big
fancy electromagnet....if you expose the tape to a strong magnetic field,
then it will wipe the tape completely. Enjoy!

Subject: tentative FS: Sony DTC-ZE700 DAT deck
Date: Wed, 7 Jul 2004 12:12:03 +0200
Hi !
I have 2 decks at home, i'm planning on selling one of them and keeping just
one.
Both of them are model DTC-ZE700, last sony DAT generation, roughly
equivalent to
the R300 but with SCMS. European model (220Volt).
One of them is the one I use solely for my DAT master -> CDR transfers.
It has approximately 150 hours on the heads. No more than 200 hours.
Always babied it, not a scratch, never eat a tape, never gave a dropout or
diginoise and still looks like new.
The other one I bought as my backup unit. It is still new in box, never
needed to use it
because my other unit always performed so well.
Will listen to offers for any of these machines.

Nope...he's fanatically anti-taping. If you want to tape, you'll have to
stealth very carefully.
