I taped James McMurtry and band at John Barleycorn's in Wichita KS on
11-15-2003. He was aware of it and did not object, either before, during or
after the show. They were also taping for the live CD that was released this
year. He puts on a great show and I didn't notice any airs regarding a
literary connection. As James says, he used to think he was an artist but he
found out he was a beer salesman.

Anyone know how James McMurtry feels about taping? I'm guessing he is
against it, based on his "literary" reputation.
Thanks,

you have any questions or comments, please call or email me. I will be glad
to discuss prices with you if you are interested. We are a very large

Are some brands of DVD Recordable better than others?
As those of us who work in the business of disc production start to see DVD
Recordable become a significant portion of usage, some of the standards
we=B9re use to working with are challenged. Need help finding the best CD-R
for your job? No problem, I can handle that. Tell me what you=B9re doing, how
you=B9re sending it, what=B9s going on the disc and how the disc be used, and I
can point you in the right direction. Archiving? Then Mitsui/MAM-A gold is
the best for you. Need a low price on discs that won=B9t let you down? Go wit=
h
the Taiyo Yuden.=20
Unfortunately DVD Recordable isn=B9t the same easy group of answers. Check
with a manufacturer about why their particular DVD works best, and you=B9ll
get comparisons to their CD-R quality and broad statements about overall
quality, which are hard to measure or prove.
So how do you differentiate one DVD Recordable from another? Well the
starting point is what works for you. If you have had positive experiences
with a particular DVD Recordable, then keep going with it. We=B9ve found in
our office that certain DVDs can be "problem solvers", or the discs we send
out when a client complains of playback problems in a laptop or old set-top
player. A problem inherent with inexpensive DVD media is video skip, which
will occur in the second half of a full DVD. Another issue is ability to
recognize the disc in older laptop or set-top players. By recording to
Verbatim, MAM-A or Taiyo Yuden DVD, most of these errors can be avoided.
These three manufacturers use quality dye materials, and the AZO dye used b=
y
Verbatim has specific long-life characteristics. The AZO dye shows lower
error rates after 600 hours of aging, where the specification is below 280
hours.
Another aspect of DVD disc quality is the bonding agent, which keeps the
two-piece DVD disc together. A DVD recordable is made of two thinner discs,
which are held together by bonding glue. The ability of the bonding glue to
resist breakdown in extreme conditions is a key part of the disc quality. W=
e
see many DVDs, which are damaged from impact on the side, where the impact
separated the two discs, damaging the dye and reflective layer. Using a
premium bonding glue can dramatically increase the performance of the discs
in aging test. Tests have show the premium Verbatim product can again excee=
d
over 600 hours of aging, while some media with one particular bonding glue
showed increased errors at outer areas.
The final pieces of the quality picture are the polycarbonate & reflective
layer. These parts of the disc can vary in thickness & density based on the
manufacturers efforts to keep costs down. Even a tiny drop of saved plastic
can save a lot over the production of millions of discs, so lower-priced
manufacturers tend to use the minimum they can while staying within specs.
Just like with CD-R using the better DVD Recordables has benefits that work
for you from start to finish.

Hi,
Does anyone know of a good program for removing cassette tape hiss? I have
Cool Edit 2000 and I have not found a great setting with the filters it has.
If someone knows of a good setting on Cool Edit that would be very helpful
too. Most of these filters remove too much which make the end result sound
"tingly." Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you,
Ken

Hey,
You _sure_ about that serial number? The picture shows a _blue_ faceplate.
AFIK, SN #V001-#V054 were all made w/ red faceplate covers.
The first 30 numbers are individuals, w/ variations in how they were manufactured,
& in how they work w/ different mic impedances.
Things standardize after #V030, & are primarily machine assembled after #V054.
The blue faceplate started w/ #V055... (BTW, I own #V009. :) )

I have a bunch of DATs transferred to disc and no longer want to keep=20
the tapes.
tapes are in two batches.
first batch is 33 tapes of various artists.
second batch is 34 tapes of Widespread Panic, mostly from 1999 and 2000.
tapes are mostly Sony with a few Maxell, etc.
all tapes are clones of unknown generation for the most part.
all are labeled with setlists, source info, etc.
in most cases I have not listened to these tapes in a year or more.
tapes are being offered as is.
I'd like to get 12 unopened blanks for each batch.
I prefer Sony 60 meter DDS tapes.
I will cover mailing the tapes to you via USPS.
if you order the blanks from Cascade Media, I can pick them up and save=20=
you shipping.
they are $25 for 10 Sony 60m tapes.
thanks!
Robert

Dominic Miller (Sting’s guitarist) opened the show solo acoustic. Sting came
out and sang “Shape of My Heart” for his final song. Annie Lenox was the
second opening act. She rocked. The sounds system at the Tweeter Center was
cutting in and out. They had technical problems so there is a noticeable
difference in sound at some parts during the show. When all the speakers
worked, the sound quality was superb. The show was taped center stage, from
the front of the lawn. Sting had two drummers, two keyboard players, two
backup singers, one guitarist, and he played Bass. Synchronicity II still
did not sound as full as it did when the trio of The Police played it. They
did a cool improvisation during Roxanne. Sting’s voice sounded overall
healthy.

certainly a beer or 2 would be coming your way. For purchase, whatever's
fair + a little something for you. I waited too long, and now can't get
