Just out of curiousity, what type of digital audio compression was used by the Sirius satellite broadcasts of Crossroads? In Europe, digital radio (on various platforms, including satellite) uses MPEG-1, Layer II compression, at bitrates varying from as low as 64kbps mono up to about 256kbps stereo. The most common bitrates used for music-based stations is 192kbps Stereo or Joint-Stereo. I'm interested to know what kinds of compression and bitrates are used in North America. Dave.

Here's the info: 09/15/2004 Middle East Cambridge, MA I might be going but I'm not sure. I have to see if I can borrow a mic from someone. Anyone else going?? Bill
From: "Saint Steven" <teasinthatbooboo@hotmail.com> Subject: Nomad Date: Fri, 30 Jul 2004 07:56:28 -0400 I've used a Nomad Jukebox 3 for live recording for nearly two years. IMHO, it works at least as well as DAT in terms of reliability. There have been a couple of recordings with noise introduced, mostly in the form of clicks and random diginoise, but I would estimate less than 1% of the time. It's never 'misloaded' a tape, I can promise you that! Once you have done a transfer of a 3 hour show to your hard drive in under a minute, you'll become a convert. You will need an A/D for phantom powering microphones, and an optical digital output to get digi in to the Nomad, although the analog line-in stage works fairly well when you need it. We've been using the Edirol UA5, and it's pretty cheap and works like a champ. Level meters on the Nomad suck, although they are better than nothing. I keep meaning to build a little box of LEDs for easier level monitoring, but still haven't gotten around to it. You can record various sampling rates, and maybe bitrates - as far as I know, the Nomad just records the digital signal you feed it (I've fed it 48k, no problem), although I'm sure there are limits to that. Max file size is 3 GB, unless that's been fixed in a more recent firmware update than I'm running. With the two internal batteries, you can easily get 7-8 hours of recording time on a charge. It's tough to get a three-hour show on one internal battery. It also works as a hard drive. You can fill the thing with 20 (or 40 or 60, depending on the model you get) gigs of shows, take 'em to a friend's house, and copy them to another computer in minutes. The 60-gig model will hold about 85 hours of 16-bit / 44.1 khz tunes... I like it. We still run a D8 ('cause we have one, so why not?) in parallel out of the UA5 as backup, but we almost never so much as play the DAT back. Lots of info here: www.nomadness.net Good luck. ttbb
From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: Request for L.A. Taper - Joni Mitchell Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 09:13:34 EDT From the Joni Mitchell discussion list: <<Joni will be visiting Los Angeles radio station KPFK 90.7FM next Tuesday (8/3/04) afternoon for a Conversation/Interview. the program will be broadcast from 4:00-to-5:00pm (CA. time), and is hosted by Aura Bogado. i'm told that she calls her program RadioActive but that's not a Title you'll see in the Program Grid on the KPFK Website. you'll simply see the names Aura Bogado/Alex Ko. THAT's the program.>> If anyone can tape this, I have plenty of Joni to trade or I can send you stuff by other artists. I would prefer an FM recording to a webcast, but will take what I can get. Please let me know if you can help. Thanks, Wes Kindtaper@aol.com
From: "Gordon Gidluck" <gidluck@alltel.net> Subject: RE: Subject: The future of Live recordings Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 09:57:36 -0500 Alfredo, Perhaps you have not heard of the 24-bit recording which is now possible on the Pocket PC? I am continuing to develop recording software for this platform. The solution uses a handheld pda using the Core Sound PDAudio device as a digital input. PDAudio is in a compact flash type I card format and accepts toslink or coaxial sources. Using an expansion chassis, there are a variety of mass storage options, including 5gb pcmcia disc drives, microdisk (currently available in 4gb), and storage bricks. The storage brick (Addonics Pocket Exdrive) is an external solution which uses a PCMCIA interface. It allows you to use laptop drives (20, 40, 60gb) housed in a portable storage case. It can be powered from the pocket pc or from an AC adapter. High capacity CF storage is also available, but at a higher cost per mb. You will need a mic pre/converter to feed PDAudio, and Core Sound makes an excellent sounding 24-bit small form factor preamp and converter called Mic2496. The price of the whole package (pda, converter, storage) is comparable to the unit mentioned. How well does it work? In the pocket pc, initially we had some problems handling the large amount of data reliably, but I have been making improvements to the software over the course of the last year. 24-bit/44.1 or 48kHz recording is possible using the aforementioned discs. Using an update mode feature of my software, recording at 24-bit 96kHz is possible for extended time periods. You can also record for up to 40 minutes at that data rate without using the update mode recording. Files can be up to 4gb in size and are stored in wav format. I have a tool which can split files into 2gb pieces also. In the event that there are any problems with framing of the data, we have found that files are recoverable using windows editing software if imported as raw data with different starting offsets. Live2496 software is reasonably priced at $50 US. Information regarding hardware is available from links on the Core Sound web pages. http://www.core-sound.com/HighResRecorderNews.html http://www.core-sound.com/pdaudio-cf.html Gordon Gidluck http://www.gidluckmastering.com/live2496.html > From: Alfredo Caprio <MD2001@mclink.it> > Subject: The future of Live recordings > Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2004 09:02:01 +0200 (CEST) > > In last digest one guys asked infos about Iriver iHP 120/ 140 and a Nomad Jukebox 3, and I'm > curious to know real experience of DAT taper who tried those equipment. > Surfing on the net I found other solution, like recording with laptop, but don't think this will be the > reference for the "Art of taping", despite the fact that it would very difficult tape in stealth condition. > So I think that , in my case, that I have a set of mics that need phantom power, the best solution >would be a unit like the Marantz PMD670K2.

Reply-To: "Slipkid" <slipkid@voicenet.com> Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 15:55:22 -0400 regarding this thorny topic i am not a lawyer, either civil or criminal (& i am not sure which one applies), but i believe that as long as you do not SELL anything you tape or trade for, whether they be from radio broadcasts or crowd/SBD recordings, you don't violate any actual "laws" per se (assuming that you do not copy/trade/sell recordings that are OFFICIALLY AVAILABLE like the latest album by jimmy thudpucker or whatever) but i could be wrong and even if your taping/trading of NON-OFFICIAL items DOES violate some "law" or another, i think that the penalties for such violation would be related to the financial profits that you made in doing so, and if you did not financially profit, then you do not enter the realm where it would be worth anyone's time or trouble to "bring you to justice" from a "moral" or "common sense" standpoint i see nothing wrong with fans freely sharing UNOFFICIAL recordings, especially since such sharing is done by those who are the ones who buy the official product anyways, plus this actually INCREASES the paying fanbase by exposing the music to a larger audience who later become fans themselves who then go & buy the OFFICIAL stuff & go to the concerts themselves; but i DO see something wrong with people financially PROFITING off such recordings by selling them maybe the "moral" aspects come into play regardlesss of what the "law" might be...perhaps the "moral" aspects of this come into play when an entity like the RIAA decides who it is going to file a lawsuit against (a taper/trader of a live show as opposed to someone SELLING bootlegs on ebay or someone downloading officially released songs/product for free off the 'net) i've never heard of anyone yet being arrested/fined/sued for recording or trading an unofficial recording, but there are loads of cases of actions against people who sell them, and of course there are all the widely publicized RIAA lawsuits against people downloading officially released "product" would love to hear more about this from the legal eagles though - jon -
