DAT heads has a great microphone FAQ:

Not sure what your price range is but the best thing to do is probably listen to alot of recordings and see what sources you like.
Personally I like mics with interchangeable caps so you can change them to meet your needs. I currently run Nak CM-100s and have the CP1, CP2, and CP4 caps. They are very versitle and at least to my ears are some of the best sounding < $1000 mics around.
If your planning on stealthing I was just given a set of Sonic Studio DSM-6P that I am very impressed with. The new versions of these run anywhere from $450-$650 (with one high end model for $2000)
There are some new brands out there that are somewhat inexpensive and sound just as good as the old classics. These have really caused the price of classic mics to drop recently.

AFAIK, all the Sampo players will handle both, although you may have
to use the remote hack found at:

I have an old DVE612N and it seems to play everything.

I'm also looking for NY Dolls set as well as Iggy and
the Stooges, either from the digital radio braodcast
or an aud.
Any leads on these sets would be greatly appreciated.

nope
however there are "1 clk" programs that will convert the fps & res of
the vobs or
extracted mpg (but like any "1 clk" prog they leave lil to desire)
otherwise the
best ways that i kno of are still Procoder or CCE or TMPGEnc all of
which are just
fantastic mpeg encoders, then just reauthor w/ all the same content.
the process is long & time consumin at points.
(if its a retail dvd hit the local rental store, library, or online
discount house)
