Hello there! I'm still trying to track down a taper in the Michigan =

His name is Mike I believe. I know this is a tough stretch, but I'm =

Neal,
I believe the general consensus of this group is that the 3 hr. DATs cause
more strain on the recording deck. Most equipment manufacturers advise
against using them. With that said, I use them all the time in my Sony M1
and have had relatively no problems. I DO believe they cause the deck to
age prematurely, but I've recorded many concerts that were well in excess of
2 hrs. and the convenience of not having to change tapes (and not missing
any music) is a worthwhile trade-off for me. If it means that I have to get
my deck serviced every couple of years, so be it. If you only record a
couple of shows using 3 hr. DATs, I can't imagine it could cause much harm.
I will say that I only use the 3 hr. DATs when I have to (which, in my case,
is fairly often), but I use the 2 hr. DATs whenever possible. It's a good
idea to keep a supply of both.
Regarding recording over your masters: While I presume this is for budgetary
concerns, this still seems rather short-sighted to me. I'm sure there are
(many) people on the list who would be more than happy to trade you brand
new tapes in exchange for your masters. If something should happen to any of
your discs, you'll know who has the master and you can always retrieve it.
Also, who knows what tomorrow's technology holds? There many be a much
better storage medium (safer, higher resolution, longer
lifespan)/convenience solution in the future, and you may want to transfer
your masters again. If you know where to find your masters, this option may
be available.

I've been using the SONY DG60P DAT tapes for a few years now and have been
really happy with them. I was about to make another order when my eyes
wandered to the adjacent DG90P tapes. A lot of shows I go to are a bit more
then 2 hours, but 3 would save me having to swap tapes in the vast majority
of shows. Does anyone have reasons why I shouldn't just get the DG90P
tapes?
I already record over some of the shows I tape after I've transferred them
to
CD. As I watch the pile of DAT tapes that I'm saving grow, I'm starting to
wonder if there is any real need for me to save them, rather then re-use
them. I would assume that the DG90P's might have less of a shelf lufe (and
re-use life?), but I'm not sure I care that much about that.
Thoughts?

I have those mics - are you using a 9V external battery module? You must
use an external battery module for loud music. The mics require some
power to operate, and without the battery module the mics will pull power
from the preamp, and there is not enough power there for the mics to
operate like they are designed to in loud environments.
you should only use line input for recording loud, amplified music with
those mics.

in my experience using sonics (both /M and /L) for almost 10 years now, i
use the MIC setting & the sensitivity at -20dB or i get bass distortion like
you described
with those settings on my d100 that has the "mod-2" power modification they
sound great, & i push the peak levels at loud shows up to about -3 or so
ditto for a friend's m1 without the "mod-2" where he uses the PA-6LC 85 hz
bass roll-off instead of the "mod-2" deck modification
i don't use an sbm1 though so i can't say for sure what settings you should
use
have you consulted with leonard of sonics? i'm sure he could help you -

Thanks for the feedback folks. I'll probably order a mix of tapes. However,
I'm thinking the 3 hour ones are certainly more convenient, and it's hard to
know in advance that your show will be less then 2 hours.

Those are all good points. It is a combination of money and time that was
making me ask. As I watch the boxes of DAT's pile up, I wonder about the
value and expense of saving them. The vast majority of the tapes I have
saved are from an unamplified acoustic concert series that I run. The
mastering time on these is pretty excessive, so the amount of time it would
take to remaster them is pretty daunting. (It's so much harder then editing
an amplified show from a big venue!) I also record a lot of shows around
town for people and I'm only slightly interested in the results (in any
format), so I'm not eager to keep them.
But I certainly have some recordings I would hate to lose. And I fully
recognize that some of the little artists I tape today might be potentially
important artists in the future. I'm doubtful that someone would trade for
my masters, since I'm taping mostly obscure and unknown artists.
Thanks for the feedback,
neal

not going to cut/paste the entire date list, but the dates can be found here:
http://www.temporaryresidence.com/www/trl_html/tours.htm
audio/video/soundboard have been fine in the past.
their sets are typically under an hour and the shows are mostly $10 or
less, i think.
their music has been compared to mogwai and godspeed you! black emperor,
for an idea of the sound.
hoping to get as much of the tour covered as possible.
i don't know of many dates that are covered at this point.
