Subject: Edirol R1 Date: Tue, 05 Oct 2004 21:50:24 +0200 I had contact with someone from edirol Uk and he told me the device takes up to 4GB flash cards. from someone else i heard 3gb is always the maximum (technical), but this is not the biggest problem i guess if you can just press record again and record 2gb once more. I have not seen any more decent pictures. i am especially intrested in the LCD levels. Are there any? Hey you guys email me. I really need your help next month (November). I'm doing video and a audience matrix mix. More details when I talk to you :) Peace, Bruce __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! It's taken a while but there now seem to be fairly equivalent tools available under Linux for audio work. I don't do much CD ripping, mainly just transferring of DAT's and burning CD's. Here's what I've been using: Audacity - nice cross-platform (free) audio editor. I've used it for some simple editing (normalization, fades, etc) and it works quite nicely. It also works w/ a good variety of plugins but I haven't tried any of this (yet). The homepage is: http://audacity.sourceforge.net wavbreaker - this is a simple little app that quite resembles CD Wave on windoze. However it only has 1 purpose, and that's to split wav files into tracks. Like CD Wave wavbreaker splits tracks along CD sector boundaries so that there are no pops or clicks between tracks. The homepage for wavbreaker is: http://huli.org/wavbreaker and I'm actually maintaining RPMS of wavbreaker, which can be found here: http://homer.homelinux.net/rpms K3b - this is a nice burning app, which is essentially a front-end to either cdrecord or cdrdao. I've found some minor problems w/ the cdrecord included in recent Red Hat/Fedora distros, so I always using cdrdao as the underlying burning software. One thing to note about K3b - make sure to set the default pre-gap in the preferences to 0 seconds. If you don't do this even when selecting DAO it will add 2 second gaps between tracks. K3b is included in Fedora Core now, and their homepage is: http://www.k3b.org/ xmms - this is essentially the winamp equivilent for Linux. grip - this is a nice little CD ripping app. It's essentially a front-end for cdparanoia and cdda2wav. Haven't used it much but it seems fairly nice. It's included in Fedora releases, and probably other distros too. growisofs - this is a simple command line interface for burning DVD's. It's free, included in Fedora (and probably others), and easy to use. mplayer - this is a gui app that will play DVD's and movie files (mpeg, avi, etc). This seems to have the widest support for the various different video file formats, at least from my experience. And if you've made it this far I also have a few handy scripts I've written for the tasks I do frequently: drecord - simple wrapper script for using arecord (ALSA) dburn-shns/dburn-wavs - for burning CD's from .wav, .shn, and .flac formats. dshn/dflac - these will compress .wav files to .shn or .flac and create the files containing md5 checksums. These scripts are available here: http://homer.homelinux.net/scripts Enjoy, and support free software! Peace, Dave ======================================================== From: "John R. Vanderpool" Subject: linux sound tools (need help and have some to offer too) Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2004 11:45:06 -0400 (EDT) well, i took the plunge and bought my first computer ever (dell inspiron 8100 laptop $1500), i work all day on a computer so last thing i've ever wanted to do was go home to one, but i finally folded. still looking for some advice on linux audio/video tools. i really need a good audio editor, gnusound wouldn't even compile (which is surprising since most gnu stuff is easy to build). here's what i've found so far: cdp/cdplay command line playing cd aplay command line playing sound files xmms gui for playing sound files and cd cdparanoia EAC'ing cdda audio * cdrecord write audio files to cd cdda2wav read audio file from cd xcdroast gui front end to cdrecord (have to use ide-scsi interface) ** cdrecord-ProDVD read/write dvd (still testing, looks very promising) xine play dvd with gui *=xcdroast uses cdda2wav, but cdparanoia seems to have more paranoia protection **=use 4x speed for 90 minute CDRs anybody else found some good stuff out there!? ------------------------------ From: "Frank Rinaldi" Subject: re: Edirol R1 Date: Tue, 5 Oct 2004 14:25:22 -0700 According to the design engineers at Edirol, 2 GB is not the limit. 4 GB CF will work as well. We are accepting preorders for this now. We will have them in Mid-November. Our price is $439 thanks, Frank From: Seth Breidbart Subject: Re: New SS Recorder From Edirol Price Correction Date: Mon, 4 Oct 2004 21:53:37 -0400 (EDT) > http://www.edirol.com/products/info/r1.html Do you know if the 2GB CF card maximum is really the maximum, or only the largest they knew of when they wrote the copy? It even had spectral views implemented, really useful for editing quiet music. Links for Audacity and other Linux soundfile editors are available at the direct link http://linux-sound.org/snded.html If you tend to record concerts, cdrdao is really useful for setting track and index marks in a big soundfile without having to save lots of shorter files. If you've got a DVD burner in your machine, you might also want to check out dvd+rw-tools and k3b, too. Edirol only specs 137 min using the 64MB card supplied when using mp3 mode at 64kbps (yuck!) Can you get some additional info from Edirol? Other than the fact that a 2GB card will cost more than the recorder itself, this looks very promising. Depending on what they say, maybe a smaller card could be used, but I am not optimistic about that. The website ("Recording Time Table" link) says a 2GB card at 24 bit, 44.1 kHz (no choice of sampling rate) gets you 125 minutes.
