The R1 will not take microdrives; too much current (thanks Wayne). As far
as sound quality, Edirol is a division of Roland and my take is that if it
comes from Roland, it will sound good--they call it a music recorder and
make references using fancy audio "quality" words. We have been Roland
dealers for decades. Naturally this is subjective, but it is what it is and
I know that Roland will do their best. I am sure that someone will come up
with a mod to stabilize or change some parameter and more power to them.
Remember, some of you started with the D3 for Gods sake. BTW, there is a
"pro" model with digital inputs coming down the pipeline, too.
Now, this is not marketed as "the end-all be-all solid state recorder of the
year for everyone that wants to replace DAT" and I am not saying it is.
Remember, it uses lossy compression. I called your attention to it as it
may be worth considering as an entry-level device instead of those dreadful
minidiscs or as an audio backup. But considering all the attention I am
getting from the news and radio media that aren't recording 6 hours of an
outdoor concert, this will be a boon to ENG over MD if only for time saved
in transferring and editing files.
Thanks!

before anyone gets themselves in an uproar over this...
it has no digital input (or output for the field).
If it has the same A/D chip as the UA5, then it will sound pretty nice.
I"m also wondering of its "mic in" capability to record a PA.
Edirol, if they have taught me anything over the years...it is not to
get all too excited about their products.

WAV files are limited to 2GB due to deficiencies in the file format
spec. The Edirol nit is probably limited by this fact. Many programs
(such as Sound Forge) use the .wav files as their native format. Go
much over 2 hours at 24bit and you are hosed - maybe the software will
halt recording, maybe it will continue writing a WAV file you won't be
able to open unless you are a digital surgeon.

Very good news. Any word on whether it will have sample rates other than
44.1KHz?

Presumably not true of its full-resolution 24 bit WAV mode, correct?

Anyone know how long their sets have been lasting on this tour, or any
recent tours?

Hey Everybody,
Recently taped the current lineup of the Jim Weider Band at my local
brewery, Keegan Ales in Kingston New York with permission from Jim. They
opened for Tony and Peter Levin's local project, Uncle Funk.
Here's the lineup:
Jim Weider - Guitar, Vocals
Sid McGinnis - Guitar
Mike Kemp - Bass, Vocals
Randy Ciarlante - Drums, Vocals
Dan McKinney - Keyboards
Mics set up at the front of the stage, Core Sound binaurals with bass
roll-off battery box in a simulated binaural array with acoustic baffles on
a 5' stand dead center > -20 db mic input > Sony TCD-D8 > Sony DGP Dat @
44.1khz > Tascam DA-302 > Hosa DRA-501 Coax > Tascam CD-RW700.
All in all, a nice recording with good stereo separation. I've also got the
Uncle Funk set with the same setup in case anyone's interested.
This fits on 1 - 80 minute CD-R. Seeking other good audience or board tapes
of Jim Weider or The Band.
Thanks,
Paul Beichert

"On March 10th, 1984, the late Rodney Dangerfield came to DAR Constitution
Hall in Washington DC to perform 2 classic shows in front of sold out
audiences. Having possession of the master cassette soundboards, I
transferred both late & early shows to cdr.
In memory of Rodney’s passing, I am offering to do a B&P for either or both
shows to anyone on the list who wants a slice of history.
If you are interested, please contact me at: mexminute@comcast.net
I will return your e-mail with instructions for the B&P.
