But Metallica allows taping. You might look on their website for details on the rules. --Gary ------------------------------ From: acffh Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #275- Equipment or Location? Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 23:17:23 -0500 nothing like a slamming stealth rig right in the sweet spot, but there is also nothing like a killer analog reel-to-reel in a studio. It is amazing, the sound that modern small-diaphragm condenser mics can transmit to a pocket-size digital recorder, but you do what you can. I personally prefer cardioid condensers dead center in the 8-12th row at most shows, unless the stacks are spread very wide (move farther back) or narrow (move closer or fly a stand up near the ceiling for tiny places) I know you wanna know which, but of course the answer is the best possible rig in the best possible spot, and if you have to compromise, a rig that can handle the SPL of a rocking speaker stack is often needed. .that and a good set of earplugz! If you can get the right tickets though, there is nothing like KNOWING you made the best tape you could make on a given night. -t On Oct 21, 2004, at 9:50 PM, Digestifier wrote: > From: Matthew Thayer > Subject: Equipment or Location? > Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 23:50:54 -0700 (PDT) > > I was just wondering, any thought? > Which tape sounds better: > 1. Please email me if you're interested. ========= I have a ticket for the Joe Satriani show on Tuesday, 10/26 in Milwaukee at the Pabst Theater. Because of other commitments, it doesn't look like I'll be able to attend. I'm looking to give the ticket to another taper in exchange for a copy of the show. Nice seat...first row mezzanine balcony. A portable rig up next to the speaker stack thats a rough call. Its never that simple. location recording is all about ........you guessed it, location. So that is of course the biggest factor. but there are other things to consider, like room acoustics, crowd noise...etc. sometimes the up front sound is not as good as it is in another spot in the venue. sometimes the crowd is quiet...sometimes not. Usually not these days as most people pay $50 to go out and talk about their work week instead of listening to music...but I digress. I'm not a big fan of stack taping. I"m a big fan of being between the stacks and setting up mics in any of the standard stereo techniques (with a tricked out rig). You learn by experience which method to use in any given situation as some stereo patterns work better than others depending on the other factors (room..etc). On the other hand...so many PAs are run in MONO, that it doesn't' really matter where you mics are between the stacks. ------------------------------ From: "Saint Steven" Subject: R1 Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 07:46:43 -0400 "Record jam sessions, or just sit down and mess around until you find something you like...want to hear it again? I've heard it said that can make better tapes in the sweet spot than a more expensive rig in the section. I disagree in 90% of the cases, based on the recordings I have heard. If one is going to the effort to get into the sweet spot, use the better gear and get a better tape. If your concerned about size and manageability, a V3+deck (NJ3 or DAT) and schoeps, DPAs, or neumanns with actives will fit in a small lumbar bag and you can run them upfront just as easy as in the section and get stellar tapes. All other things being equal, use the best gear you have available. You and I have opposite tastes. I think that stack tapes can sound bland compared to tapes with some of the room and a little audience in them. I like the fullness of the room sound. ------------------------------ From: John Bernhard Subject: Gov't Mule broadcast Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 10:21:53 -0400 For those in the Boston area, WZLX ( 100.7 ) will be broadcasting last weeks Mule show from the Orpheum ( 10-15-04 ) this Sunday evening at 11 pm. Both sets will be aired and there is a ABB special from 10-11 culled from their Beacon release that proceeds the concert. ------------------------------ From: Bill Shaw Subject: RE: Equipment or Location? Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2004 12:04:00 -0700 Location definitely trumps equipment in the situation described below. I'd much rather be close to the PA with an average rig than far away with a great rig. I would argue, however, that centering yourself in the room or venue such that you get an equal amount of sound from left and right PA stacks produces a superior recording to one that is made primarily from one stack. And yes, even if it's a mono mix. When you're in the center of the soundstage (is that the right term?), or basically the "sweet spot" I think you'll get a much fuller and richer sounding recording than if you are off to the side, getting mostly one stack.
