The output level of the mics is too much for the preamp stage to handle, so it overloads. The preamp stage is prior to where the rec level gets adjusted and where the meters are, so there is nothing you can do about it. It's generally understood that if the record level know is set under 4, you will get brickwalling. This problem was worse on the D7 and D8 >i hate to have to have the vol knob at 9. Why does this bother you?
