I'm not familiar with the others but I can tell you iRiver is -very-
conservative with their specs. My iHP-120 does a clean and solid 16 bits
(96 dB). BTW- the FM tuner (for which they claim 50 dB SNR) does >70 dB-
every bit as good as my rack-mount Crown FM-2.
Notice also that Nomad claims 98 which is not actually possible in a 16 bit
converter without noise reduction. (All these portables pretty much use the
same chip-set but there are considerable differences in the quality of the
implementation.) The iRiver rating is conservative and the Nomad
exaggerated. That should tell you something. :-)

Hey, has anyone taped GBV on their current (final) tour? Last year,
board feeds were all cool, just wondering whether that's different now.
Thanks,
Christian

There are other issues to consider. Iriver's specs on the H120 say that
it will only record a file up to 74 minutes. After that is goes into
"record standby" mode and must be manually restarted. This would result
in a minimum of a few seconds loss (déjà vu re cassette flips) when
recording the vast majority of "jam bands."
I'm curious as to what Creative has been doing with the Jukebox lately.
Where the hell is Jamie these days?
There is no reason* why we, as tapers don't have a decent high-quality
compact recorder. Just look at DDS v. DAT: a modern DDS-4 tape using
essentially the same hardware and cassette as a Sony PCM-M1 can store
upwards of 20 gigabytes of raw data. A decent 24/96 A/D converter would
not consume anymore power than then the current 16/48 A/D converter in
the M1. Sony could roll these hypothetical recorders off the assembly
line in a few months if they wanted to*.
With almost real-time access to popular live shows these days, the
average DatHead taper really doesn't stand a chance. Let's hope
somebody will offer a decent, affordable, solution for us holdouts
sometime in the near future. For now, DAT still seems to occupy this niche.
* We tapers are really not much more than a small blip--significantly
below the noise threshold--on the pro-audio radar.

WBCN Boston is running VELVET REVOLVER from Avalon May 29 2004
without commercials Tuesday night at 7pm according to their website.
This is the same night they play the newly renamed DCU Center in
Worcester Mass ( formerly Centrum ). Just a heads up to any interested
peoples as these broadcasts are usually poorly promoted.

Anyone have any shows from her House of Blues headlining tour? Saw her
in Boston and she was amazing.
I have a cache of stuff and would love to get some more so if you can
help out, let's trade.

A stab to see if anyone ever recorded the Chicago-based band Yum Yum. In England they released music under the name of the band's leader, Chris Holmes. Gigs were circa 1993-95. Some new demos floated around in 2001-02. Lush pop stuff.
Have 2004 recordings of Sam Phillips, Rachael Yamagata, John Legend, R.E.M., Patti Smith, Brian Wilson, G. Parsons tribute and more.

Hey Now
I am thinking about getting a Microboards QD2........
I have a friend that got one a couple years ago and has had to send it back
for software and hardware upgrades because of some troubles he was
having.....
Does anyone know if these upgrades have been made to the new units?
Are there still problems w/ this unit or have all the kinks been worked
out??
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Peace,

Namaste Y'all,
What was once a formative stop in Arizona for
young-lions to cut their teeth at has revealed it's
true nature.
The owner of Flagstaff's Mogollon Brewery has
revealed his in-the-past thinly veiled hatred of

a recent [10.31.2004] Arizona Daily Sun article.
Past bands to play Mogollon: Sound Tribe Sector 9,

Motet, Michelle Shocked, Skerik's STSeptet,
Benevento/Russo Duo, The Clumsy Lovers, Om Trio, Tony
Furtado, Hairy Apes BMX, New Monsoon, Eric McFadden
Trio, Shanti Groove, The Recipe and many
others....Spread the Word and these links to the

so sorry 'bout this run-around as the links aren't
working...i bought the story to share, alas no dice!
I won't waste bandwidth on the entire story.
Here's the damning part:
"The partners also have invested heavily in remodeling
the bar to accommodate city zoning laws and "to get
rid of the dirty hippie image," Williamson said."
