(analog414@comcast.net) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "angusyoung1000@juno.com" Subject: Questions about building some binaural mics for the TCD-D7 Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 03:27:55 GMT I've got a couple of Panasonic mic capsules which I intend to wire up to a battery box for use with my TCD-D7. I was able to find some info on the web, but have some questions about the mic construction & battery box before I get started: On the TCD-D7 why should one use the line-in instead of the mic-in? Does the D7 have attenuation on the line-in (I can't seem to find anything in the literature that says it does - only attenuation for the mic in)? If needed: instead of buying a mic attenuator cable (to save some $$) I'd like to have the attenuator circuit in the mic box. Can someone suggest an overall circuit diagram on how to build a mic/battery box system for a stereo pair with built-in attenuation? I kind of wonder how the attenuator may affect the frequency response. Anyway, I only intend to use my mic/battery box with the D7 so the design doesn't need to accomodate other DAT recorders. any help will be appreciated. thanks. ________________________________________________________________ Juno Platinum $9.95. Maybe some 184s, or 185s would be your best bet. >For small club taping, I think going w/a hyper card will help take up >the slack of bad sounding rooms and chatty crowds. ok, so for those of you who tape in small clubs, do you use omnis, cards or hyper cards? i'm getting a bit confused here cos when i have used cards when set up in bad positions in small clubs it often produces a tape that's uneven between channels. also when using cards where a lot of sound is coming directly from stage, if an amp on stage is pointed 'across' the stage a bit(or if the pa is pointed at an angle to my mics), the sound of that instrument can be noticeably 'muffled'. thanks luke ------------------------------ From: Joe Thierry Subject: AKG C451EB on Ebay Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 08:59:25 -0500 I have a single AKG C451EB mic for auction on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3762827518 Thanks, Joe ------------------------------ From: Wayne Hoxsie Subject: Re: Questions about building some binaural mics for the TCD-D7 Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 11:13:13 -0600 angusyoung1000@juno.com wrote: > I've got a couple of Panasonic mic capsules which I intend to wire up > to a battery box for use with my TCD-D7. I'm not sure how the D7 is set up internally, but if you want to dig through it, you can get a D8 service manual here: > > If needed: instead of buying a mic attenuator cable (to save some $$) > I'd like to have the attenuator circuit in the mic box. I believe that the panasonic capsules (I assume you are talking about the WM-61's) will overload at a fairly low dB level (eg levels experienced by tapers at live venues) if used "as-is" in a circuit with or without an external battery box. There are modifications you can do to the capsule itself to increase the dB ceiling. One of these that I've heard of involves reversing the ground of the capsule by cutting the trace that connects one of the leads to the case ground and reconnecting the opposite lead to the ground. This has the effect of reversing the source and drain leads of the internal FET and reducing its gain. I've never tried this so I can't comment on the characteristics of this mod. I've also seen small surface mount resistors used to bridge the two leads and thus bleed off some of the signal but I don't know what ohm values were used. -- Wayne D.
