("American-Digital") iso: wilco fillmore and paramount tapes (Matthew Blum) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Mark J. Dulcey" Subject: DVD brand recommendations anyone? Date: Tue, 23 Nov 2004 22:27:25 -0500 Correction on my previous post, was looking at the wrong product sheet (as the speed indications should have told me anyway): Plextor DVD-R 8X (Taiyo Yuden) Verbatim Pastel DVD-R 4X (Taiyo Yuden) Fuji DVD+R 8X (Taiyo Yuden) Verbatim Pastel DVD+R 4X (Taiyo Yuden) Is there quality difference in + or - anyway (my burner - like most these days - can handle both)? Given that all the discs you're looking at are actually made by the same manufacturer, there probably isn't a whole lot to choose between them, other than perhaps the speed ratings -- if you have an 8x or faster drive, you'll probably prefer the 8x discs. As for the +R vs. -R thing, there isn't any difference in quality inherent to the format difference. But there are occasional compatibility issues with old DVD players and DVD-ROM drives, and there is no consistent pattern; some players will read +R but not -R, and others will read -R but not +R! If you're making them for your own use, go with whatever makes your own DVD players happy; if you're making them for trade, it's probably best to have some blanks of each type on hand, in case your trading partner asks for a specific type. ------------------------------ From: avps Subject: core sound dpa4061 batt box voltage Date: Wed, 24 Nov 2004 00:14:30 -0500 at what voltage does the sound quality deteriorate with the core sound "high end binaural" batt box. what voltage should i replace the batt at? thx avps@erols.com ------------------------------ From: "American-Digital" Subject: RE: DVD brand recommendations anyone? Date: Wed, 24 Nov 2004 07:44:28 -0500 DVDR unlike CDR has not reached maturity yet and quality still can vary quite a bit. Plus, let's face it...until these are used for at least 5 years and you can go back and get flawless extractions, nobody can say for certain which manufacturer to go with. However, there have been great strides lately and I think the quality has improved quite a bit. Both Taiyo and Mitsui after some early problems now make very good DVDR's. The latest dye called AZO dye seems to be very stable. Lots of the budget manufacturers are using this and I suspect Fuji and TDK are too, but do not publish or advertise that fact. My opinion (only an opinion) would be to try the AZO dye for everyday burning, for handouts, movies, etc and Fuji or Mitsui for the important, not easily replaced or irreplaceable things. I never think it is smart to put all your eggs in one basket. Even if you spend more and go with an expensive brand name that could be the media that gives you problems down the road. Make doubles/backups of anything critical and go back and try extractions a few weeks, a few months and a few years later. Last but not least. I find that DVD-R is much more compatible with DVD players that the DVD+R. So if your making stuff for friends and want the best possibility the media will work, go with DVD-R. Moving forward just about any new DVD player tends to be compatible with both and even the RW's (rewritable). Dan BWT- I'll do 3 BnP's for Phish 12-30-93 5.1 DTS or SBD+AUD matrix mix.
