Hi!
You couldn't think of a better solution for yourself. At the moment I=20
think the iBook
is the best priced laptop there is when comparing features and quality.
Myself i run an old Powerbook G4 which in january will be 4 years old=20
(!) and I'm running the latest
version of Mac OS X. So is my girlfriend, but she has a same age iBook.
We have changed our batteries mine was only running for an our after 3=20=
years, so i decided
to get a new one.
Of course, you will need an audiocard for the iBook. And there's alot=20
of them out there. You can't get a PCMCIA
card since the iBook doesn't have such a port, but you can get a=20
Firewire or USB-card. The iBook will run most of them
nicely, even the bigger 8-input Firewire interfaces.
You will also be able to cope with school and not having to fiddle=20
around with viruses. If you get a virusmail
just put it in the trash. Also, I'm not sure if you get this in USA,=20
but in Sweden there are student discounts on
Apple's products. Maybe you 'll save some more money?

Subject: Which stereo handheld microphone would you buy?
Date: Fri, 3 Dec 2004 11:30:40 +0100
Hello,
I am looking for opinion and advice before buying a handheld stereo
microphone. It is to be connected on a digital recorder with phantom
powering and low-noise preamplifiers.
So far, I have the following information/opinions:
1) Audio-Technica AT822 or 825 : good microphones, fair price, maybe a
little weak in sensitivity.
2) Sennheiser MCE 82 : good microphone, however with much equivalent
noise level (32 dB SPL)
3) Sennheiser MKP-44 has a poor low end (sensitivity drops from 300 Hz
downwards).
4) Shure VP-88. Very good sound, interesting choice between several
configurations of MS matrixing. However, very weak sensitivity (0.5
mV/PA!) and high price (over 1.000 US$)
5) Sanken CMS-7s : very good specifications (high sensitivity) but
costs too much. Maybe in second hand?
6) Sony ECM-MS5 : seems a little bit weak in the low frequencies, but
has high sensitivity?
7) Sony ECM-999P : no idea!
8) Rode NT-4 : very good specifications and XY stereo. Some people
pretend you can hold it in the hand without creating manipulation
noise in the recording. Is it true?
So, any opinion or suggestion is welcome! (especially about NT-4,
ECM-999P and ECM-5MS or AT-825 vs AT-822)
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Roald Baudoux

I think all sony portable dat decks are now discontinued..and parts are
going to be hard to come by. same goes for the dappy.
replacement?
head right over to eBay and snatch up a $168 creative labs Nomad JB3
.... 20 or 40gb models.
get a hosa s/pdif format converter (to feed it a bit perfect toslink
signal, as that is its digital input) and say good-bye to media costs,
maintenance costs, broken anythings, real time transfers, tape
misloads..yadda yadda yadda.
and say hello to firewire transfers in 3 minutes. You'll also need to
find an extra battery for it (they take two at once...for about 5-6
hours of record time).
there are more of these in use by tapers these days than DAT decks, or
so it would seem when I am w/a bunch of tapers at any given show.

dat2wav isnt a program 4 playin dats really, its cumbersome & archaic,
its really only good 4 dumping them 2a hard drive (at 2times the speed)
the dat2wav guys STOPPED supportin it along time back (atleast 3 years
w/out any updates)
but usually the guy 'chris' i think his name was would answer emails
2sell it, atleast the 2years ago when i broke down & finally bought my copy
a good windows GUI program is vDAT by edward 'sumthin in german' who
does still support his program (no updates in a year or so but says hed
like 2 keep workin on it) & he does respond to emails, & if you have a
student ID hell email the program 2u 4 $50
im nolonger a student otherwise i would have done this back when i
bought dat2wav....
anyho i can prolly dig up a dat2wav copy w/ the 'magic' .dll that makes
it fully working if you still need it (wish sum1 would do the same thin
4me w/ vDAT ;)

when Sony announced that it was going to
discontinue the D8, i remember hearing (perhaps
even reading on DAT-heads) that some outsourced
repair companies (maybe Oade Brothers or Sonic
Sense) said that they tried to stock up on as
many replacement parts as they could... the
company that mentioned this, said that they hoped
to have replacement parts for up to 2 years after
the D8 was discontinued... sorry that I cannot be
more specific in my answer... but at least there
is some hope...
you should check around with Oade Brothers, Sonic
Sense, American Digital, Masterpiece A/V,
micsupply.com... various places like that and see
if they can help you with repairs... (there's
other places... btu i can't think of them right
now).

Hi All,
I recently sent my Sony D-8 into Sony in
California to have the heads
replaced and the Mic connector changed out. A
few days ago, I received the
unit back with a note attatched saying that the
parts were no longer
available.
Does anybody know if Sony is still manufacturing
parts for these machines?
Are there any repair facilities that charge a
flat fee to repair them?
What is a good portable machine to have now days
for good recordings?
Thanks

Are there any fans of Juliana Hatfield that have located a clean copy of her
unreleased 1997 album "God's Foot?" Mixes of these Bearsville Studio sessions
were circulated for review prior to Atlantic Records cancelling the release,
so I'm hoping they are out there somewhere. I have access to a large cache of
Juliana Hatfield audio and video masters to trade, if anyone can help with
this. Stu

Thanks to all who have emailed me with suggestions
and comments.
I have heard from the author of the program, so it is
still available. I'm waiting on the arrival of the
hardware to test it (and also VDAT, which many have
recommended.
I'll keep you posted.
