For what you describe there is definitely an audience. However,
how is this different than etree, taperssection, oade.com, etc?
Not that there isn't room for another resource. I'm glad people have
the enthusiasm to maintain these sites.

One of the few PCI cards that does on-the-fly sample rate conversion
fairly well is the discontinued, and not supported: Lucid PCI24. A
Google search will give you lots of info.
This card only has coax digital in and out. No analog in or out. Most
people today are using outboard a/d and d/a converters to avoid noise
from the inside of the computer. Some feel that software sample rate
conversion is a bit better than the on-the-fly Lucid, but the Lucid
is pretty good.
You may find that an outboard USB or Firewire unit will fit your
needs better, even if it means a PCI Firewire/USB card.

Hi Michael,
I will leave it up to someone else to comment on the scsi DAT.
One thing you might want to consider for transferring DAT's is the PDAudio card from Core Sound. PDAudio is digital in only, and can be hosted in either a Pocket PC or laptop.
For very reasonable cost, you can get into this. All you would need is an H2200 series pda (under $300 discounted), a PDAudio card ($199), a cable, and an SD card for storage. 1gb media is available for about $80 now. 2gb media is now available which should record over three hours at 16-bit 48kHz. I am a software developer for this and my software costs $50.
Files are transferred quickly to your computer with a card reader. Likely you can get a PCI USB 2 card and drivers that will work with Win95. I don't know if there are USB 2 cards available which use ISA.
PDAudio can function at a variety of sampling rates. Both 32kHz and 48kHz are supported.

Hey Now All!
Long time since I have posted. What with more people
using laptops to record, I am a bit behind in computer
use. I am looking to download and transfer DATs to a
hard drive in a home PC system. Finally, we have cable
out here in the sticks!
First. I am looking for a soundcard that will not
put an analog generation in while resampleing from 32
or 48k recorded DATs. Any suggestions?
I would like to find one with digital co-ax (SP/DIF)
& optical inputs and analog (RCA) inputs. Most likely
asking a lot here but just trying to keep 10+ years of
digital recordings as pure as possible. Also what is
the best software to get to adjust volume levels,
possibly EQ some and track with? I do not want to
become a recording engineer here, maybe down the road,
but not with good DAT recordings.
I will be getting the best Plextor burner for CDs,
but is there a better DVD-R/RW burner out there?
PLEASE, REMEMBER I AM NOT A CIS MAJOR. Hell I am
writing this from my old and trusty NEC with Windows
'95. See why I need some serious help!?
I am Just an archivist who wants to get the best
results from the best, but affordable, equipment so I
may pass it on with the highest quality. Computers are
easy to use for me as long as I have the best written
directions or I am shown how to make them do what I is
needed. Simply put, I still use my old slide rule in
the field, no shit!
Second, I have a data back-up, a Sony SDT-S5000,
that has two SCSI connections. One has been used to
back-up daily work in conjunction with a networked NT
system. I would imagine is the only way to get info
into and out of the back-up drive, so I assume it also
reads back to the computer. The second connector has a
cover that says 'passive' on it. Can this ( does this
need to) be used to read DDS DATs with music to the
hard-drive? Is there a special program needed to make
this work? Will audio DATs work in it? If not no
biggie. I still have two DA-20mkIIs and two CDRW-700
standalones that work fine.
I would greatly appreciate any solid information on
these questions and hope that I get the same support
from this group as I did when I moved up to DAT
recording.
Oh BTW, where is the best place to research the art
of downloading? Which is better, FLAC or SHN? Things
like that. I am currently reading FAQs at Etree,
NOLATAPERS, COTAPERS and any other sites I can find.
Well I wish to Thank in Advance anyone who will take
the time to help this old man who will be taking a few
computer courses in the near future. I am just an old
dog who needs to learn new tricks.
Peace and Happy Holidays to All,
Michael

Is the idea here to end up with a 44.1 file on the computer? If so,
it is much much better to simply transfer the digital source to the
computer without resampling, and then use some decent software
to convert the 32 or 48 file to 44.1.
On-the-fly resample is prone to errors because the process must
continue at the pace of the digital source regardless of what may
be going right or wrong during the process. When a file is converted,
the software can operate at whatever pace is optimum, plus features
like "look ahead" can be employed where the software makes its
resample decisions based on what it knows is coming next. That
can't happen reliably with an on-the fly transfer/resample.
Using a card with a digital input is for sure a step in the right
direction, however. No reason to go back and forth to analog.

Howdy!
Just recently found out that Modest Mouse is coming back to my neck of
woods and I'm needing some contact information on who I will need to
talk to when I get to the show. Last time I checked, they were open
taping still...so.. I'm hoping to pull a sweet tape and make up for
the last MM show I missed. Any information on this would be greatly
appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
Benjamin

it isn't all about Santa and how much you receive in Presents....but how
much love and understanding you can give others at this time of the

Hi everyone, Long time no see :(
Well..... Life has not been too swell lately....hence the reason for my
silence in the Music seen! It has been a long time since I've been able to
do my "music for Charity" Thing which I have surely missed!
Even missed out on a lot of great shows in the past year or so!
Lost my Wife to her mid life Crisis....
fought through 3 major hurricanes.....
The Wife took all that I had in savings last month.....
and is still trying to get more?
One great thing is that I still have my two Children every day...
but without being able to work like I'm used to.... the bills are piling up!
and now....
just when it was about time to get back on my feet and pick up the
pieces.....
I had to go to the emergency room because I started urinating Blood (which I
figured wasn't a good thing)
That sure helped the finances a lot!
I don't have Health Insurance!
The Hospital took me in, and held me for a week, but all they could tell me
after having test after test was that I had a large heterogeneous mass in
the mid portion of the right kidney anteriorly measuring approx. 6.5cm X
6.5cm, there are mixed areas of solid enhancement and several low density
areas which may represent necrotic regions. There are speckled
calcifications throughout the mass. This is suspicious for RENAL CELL
CARCINOMA and that I needed surgery to remove my right Kidney! But they had
the nerve to tell me that they couldn't do the surgery, that I had to get it
done at Jackson Memorial, or the Cleveland Clinic! So for the past 3 weeks,
I've been trying every where to get these "Professionals" to help me! But
without Insurance, they send me home without hope!
So It was brought to my attention that I should put my skills at raising
donations for others, to use for myself this time.... WHAT A CONCEPT! %^}
So what I'm trying to say here is that I WANT TO STAY AND JAM ON THIS EARTH
w/ you friends for a little while longer, so I've had a bunch of really KIND
FOLK help me in the past collect for all the other great causes that if I
could only get a few to help me out this time, that I just might be able to
save myself this time!
A friend has donated space and his web writing experience to build me a
relief site! I love you Noah!
And if anybody that has a site and has room could slide my link in for a
little while, I would forever be in your debt!!!
And if (I know it's not politically correct to spam people with this kind of
thing) Could send this far and wide.... Maybe if I could get a dollar for
every disc that I burned for people around the world... I could very well
pay for my surgery, and still have money left over to send to the Charities
that I worked so hard for in the past....And just think what a little more
than just a dollar would do....
Thank you my Phriends...from the bottom of my Kidney! ;)

Love you gather while your here!
Gather the memories and spread the love!!

We can highly recommend the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card. For under
$100, it has a very fine analog input and output and coaxial digital
input and output. If you need optical digital input and output you can
add an M-Audio CO2.
