the c414B-XLII is not the mic you want for concert taping. this flavor
of 414 is built pimarily for vocals and other aspects of studio
recording where you want something to come through the mix w/a bit more
of a bite. There is a rise in the high end for this. Not a super flat
mic.
the taping 414 is the 414B-ULS and new 414B-XLS. Those are the flat,
unaltered c12 capsule based 414. They rock. I dont know why more
people do not use them. They are the best LD mic for the money, imo.
They sound amazing in just about all situations, especially coincident.

My favorite mics! Hands down! These will blow Schoeps
out of the water! and if I remember correctly these
mics can handle about 100 db.
Everybody has different ears and different levels of
hearing loss, so everybody has different taste in
mics.
Sorry I can't supply you with a AKG source, because we
mixed ours into a matrix.
There is a new show on etree done w/ AKG's.
http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=10365
Bottom line: These mics rule!
Peace,
Bruce

The AKG 414 series are GREAT GREAT CLASSIC mics. They are super
versatile, with switchable pickup patterns, although the mics have to
be in your hands to change them, not like neumann's TLM170 which has
REMOTE selection.. . UPDATE! the XLII version seems to have REMOTE
SWITCHING!!! (available at the end of 2004!)
They are delicate & costly, and it would not do well to get them wet,
but they are capable of making REALLY NICE tapes.
the -B stands for BALANCED, which is normal for pro mics. . . I do not
know what the XLII version is, but I assume it's a more recently
manufactued version, which could mean it's got modern microcircuits. .
.
ok- AKG's site has this for the XLII
* High sound pressure level capability and wide dynamic range
* Completely immune to electrostatic and electro-magnetic
interference from digital gear, computer monitors, etc. thanks to solid
metal housing and transformerless output stage
* Three switchable bass cut filters and three pre-attenuation pads
with LEDs for quick visual indication
* All switchable components operate in low impedance circuits for
ultra-high reliability even in extremely humid conditions
* Optional R 414 remote control unit (available by the end of 2004)
offers full control of all switchable parameters via standard
microphone cable and 3-pin XLR-type connectors
good luck!

ps- I Have patched out of 414's at a dead show- Vegas 93, Phil side of
the section. . guy named BOB was running 'em 90 degrees blumlein.

I'm trying to downsize my collection, so I'm offering these up for B+P.
Instead of burning the shows onto your blank, you can keep MY disc and I'll
keep the blanks. I need the blanks more than I need the shows. They are
just sitting in sleeves in a box. If you're interested email me. First
come, first served.

Subject: help! - horrible hum (RSM-191 & DAT)
Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2005 22:56:16 -0800 (PST)
Our office recently purchased a Neumann RSM-191 to use
for field recording interviews. We normally use a HHB
Portadat to record, but last week the Portadat was in
the shop, so we used a DAP-1.
At several points during the (interview) recording
there was a low frequency hum, similar to what you
might hear as you insert a guitar cord (1/4" plug) in
to an amp that's already turned on.
I was able to recreate this problem in the office by
holding the mic near the DAT recorder. As I rotated
the mic (on a fishpole) the hum was audible when the
side diaphragm was pointed at the recorder (does this
make sense?). I don't believe the hum was present when
the mic was pointed straight at the recorder. The hum
was presented whether we used phantom power or the
neumann power supply (battery box).
We had also experienced this problem once when using
the HHB, although I was not able to recreate that
today.
Prior to the 191, we used the RSM-190 and never had
any hum problems. Basically, I am just hoping that
someone can explain the source of this hum. I would be
happy to post a clip of audio for anyone willing to
listen to it.
Your help would be greatly appreciated, as we are
trying to finish this radio documentary and are on a
tight schedule.
Thanks,
Kayvon
