OK..
I know this isn't very "dat" related but I know you all are very tech savvy
and I need some help ;)
I download some *goodies* movies, videos, TV shows and I want to watch them
on my dvd player.. They are MPGS and AVIS.. I try to convert them, one time
I made an IMG file then I try to burn them and I get no love..
What's the word.. How do I do this?
Help me out and I will reward you with a show of your choice from my
collection.
Thanks!

I have used a 4.5 volt "wall wart" that came with the M1 or D100 to
power the SBM in a pinch. The Sony wart that I have for the SBM (Sony
part #AC-E60HG ) is 6V 700mA, and has green printing on a white label-
the 4.5 volt units for the D100 and M1 are the Sony part #AC-E45HG and
have a blue tag.
when you use the 4.5 volt supply, only 3 of the 4 power bars light up
on the SBM, but I figure that's ok, they are just a primitive volt
meter, and when I run the unit off alkaline cells, I run it down past 2
bars into one bar and it is not a problem.
For that matter I also have a Marantz PMD-430 cassette deck that comes
with a 4.5 volt adaptor, and I have used it with a 6V adaptor, I was
told that the extra juice dissipates as heat, so that's the side effect
of slightly overpowering the DC input. watch that heat. . . ok in
winter maybe, but could bite ya in hot weather. don't wanna melt
anything!!!
hope that might help.

I'm off on a trip and would like to cut back any excess gear if
possible.
I'll be taping a number of shows using various equipment, among them an
SBM and a sharp md702 (no - the sbm will not be feeding the md!). I
know there are a lot of knowledgable folks on power usage on this list
and wonder if anyone can answer this one. The md requires 5v at 800ma
and the sbm requires 6v at 800ma. As I'd like to only take one wall
wort, would I fry the md by using the 6v charger, or would the sbm be
damaged by using the 5v charger?
many thanks

I've had one here on the bench for over a month; used it quite a bit on
different jobs. Love it. What would you like to know?
Thanks!

For Sale, A Pair of Audio Technica AT 853's with mini xlr plugs and samson
pm4 adaptors. These have the Card Capsule. Ready to go into your favorite
preamp. These are the white models, but the first 3 feet of cable by the
body are colored black and since the bodies are usually concealed with
windscreens under my hat or shirt I have never had a problem. I am looking
for $200 + shipping, I am in Spain however I will cover some of the
shipping to the US so it is not much more expensive than shipping in the
US.
Thanks!

Do a search for StreamBox VCR. You will need to
download the hacked version. This software will save
the actual streams for you into a file, bypassing
the "output from soundcard" method that will
undoubtedly add noise to the signal. One very useful
feature of Streambox if you are still using a modem as
opposed to broadband/ADSL is that it will allow you to
resume downloads. Hope this helps.

Does anyone have an opinion on who is the best
Portadat repair person in the country? If not a
specific person, then an authorized repair center you
like?
We (a small radio documentary orginization) have been
sending ours to ProDigital, with disappointing
results. Any advice would be appreciated.

Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 16:11:31 +0000
Hey clearing out some more stuff I have no use for. TCD D7 I would estimate
the hours on the heads to be around 300 however the deck took a fall during
the summer and now eats any tape you put in. I was told this is most likely
because the heads are out of alignment. The battery door broke off in the
fall and has been lost but the battery sled is still there. No pleather
case. photos availible on request. I believe this unit is fixable but I'm
really not sure. $60 obo and we can split the shipping cost.
I also have a Sony RMR-D3 in unknown condition, this is the european model
(i'm in canada) so I have no way to test this. It is without remote and may
or may not work. $25 obo + shipping (worst case you have a 7pin head on the
end)
Hosa Line Transformers might as well add these too. I used these when I
taped SBM1>D7 with no pre. XLR F > 1/4" Work fine but have a bit of tape
residue on them. $20 shipped. Paypal payments only please. I may also be
selling my dpa 4061's soon which are in perfect shape.. thanks for the
space

OK, so I am a bandwidth muncher. I'll pay the fine, I've done the
crime. See below.
Very interesting discussion on the 24 bit mixdown of two 16/44 source
versus performing the same mixdown and saving as a 16/44 source (i.e.
SBD + AUD matrix mix). Thanks for all the input, advice and free
education.
I have some people looking into the actual sonic difference btwn the two
with better gear to make a better determination if possible. At the end
of the day I think we will agree that we have saved an excellent archive
copy, we will be in step with the evolution of higher resolution music
and will have a format that offers other enjoyable perks (besides better
sound) like the complete show on a single disc and an interactive menu.
I think will also agree that the sonic difference is very subtle and
rock-n-roll ears will find difficult in determining which source is
which if subjected to a Coke vs. Pepsi "blind taste test".
5.1 DTS-Audio-CD vs. 5.1 DVD-A
I touched on this new topic and would enjoy exploring these questions
equally. As you'all know I make many 5.1 DTS-Audio-CDs. Besides being
a gigantic fan of these myself at this point I have a small but growing
legion of fans that also seem to think these are the cat's meow in
recreating a concert on the home stereo. I receive lots of great
feedback from folks and always appreciate to hear from others. Please
keep the emails coming. Earlier attempts at a DVD-A 5.1 were
frustrating, time consuming and offered result that I believe was
inferior on too many levels to spend the time. The inferior portion is
three folded.
One. The in ability to add gapless tracks. New software and a few late
nights and I've put that one to rest thankfully. However, the steps
involved are massively time consuming, extremely 'manual' for lack of a
better descriptor and just boring as hell. There must be a easier
method but I cannot argue with results.
The second was the "share-ability" of the 5.1 mix. Besides having no
method of uploading and sharing the DVD-A it also would fall upon deaf
ears. Let me explain.
DTS-Audio-CD is a wave file. Yes a freakin' weird wave file but still a
wave that can be SHNed or FLACed and uploaded/downloaded and shared.
DTS will work for pretty much any Joe Deadhead with a 5.1 setup. Which
I must comment is too few of you. Come on in boys, the water is fine!
Even many of my friends have yet to go the 5.1 route. A system can be
in place for allot less than you think these days. Although the Denon
receivers are sweet. With so few 5.1 setups we enter into a smaller
minority that have DVD-A capability. Which again I believe is
affordable and something to consider. So I'd be doing all the DVD-A
authoring for like 12 people and then have to arrange for the lame old
BnP distribution method. Or even worse...a tree!!! Yikes.
The third and final reason that 5.1 DVD-A is possibly 'inferior' is the
sound impovement over DTS. Yeah, the bread and butter of the whole
controversy in the war of 5.1 DTS-Audio-CD vs. 5.1 DVD-A. I have again
done some serious A/B-ing of the same source DVD-A and DTS-Audio-CD.
There is not much, if any, audible difference. Which for the life of me
I cannot explain. A 700MB file versus a 2GB file. The DVD-A, with that
much more data, should be overwhelmingly better. This is simply not the
case. I ask why. Is the encoding and decoding process the DTS
incorporates that good?
I have no problem making both. But before I spend 3 months going back
and making all my DTS into DVD-A's I would like to hear from some other
people. Here is where the BW tax comes in.
Serious people only. I would like to offer GD 7-16-76 on both
DTS-Audio-CD and DVD-A 5.1 to anybody who is willing to sit there and
critically listen to both and report back on their findings. Obviously
you need the capacity to A/B both versions to have that side-by-side
comparison. Hopefully shed light on this and give us your insight. I
really think I am way too close to the subject having made these 5.1
mixes. I would love the help of some impartial folks willing to lay
down a serious review.
By the way, I know many have seen or heard GD 7-16-76 in 5.1 DTS but
this is an all new mix and older versions should be thrown away.
Nothing wrong with them other than this is a better mix.
Thanks for listening (pun intended).

Notes
This is all that circulates in the SBD source.
The AUD source was lightly EQ'ed. A slight high end cut.
AUD Patch Samson approx 4:35 to fill missing part of the SBD
29:58.490 to 31:31.560 total of 01:33.070. This is noticable
but not too bad. Which is really a statement to just how
great the AUD source is.
SBD Patch Drums approx 02:37 to fill missing part of the AUD
44:07.731 to 44:15.904 total of 0:08.172. This is smooth and
most likely undetectable.
Missing 22.027 crowd on AUD source between Around & Around
and High Time. SBD trimmed accordingly to match with a 3
second crossfade. Smooth and most likely undetectable.
