From: "john e. bogus" <bogusisme@surfbest.net> Subject: blumlein matrixing for surround... Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 13:10:33 -0500 "i was wondering if a blumlein stereo configuration (2 figure 8's at 90 deg) can be matrixed into L,R,LS,RS?" I'd also be real curious to hear a report from anyone who has played around with decoding blumlein recordings into surround.....in theory, this should be entirely possible. Although the math would be probably be different and more complicated than described (maybe not, I'm not an expert on this by any means), there should be a way to add and subtract the channels so that the out of phase information is placed in the rear channels, where it belongs. I've always been curious about this myself, but have never had any recordings produced by this microphone technique to run through my old-school quad decoders. You can most certainly get the correct mathematical result by editing software, but an old SQ or QS quad decoder (or any quad / surround synthesizer) should also be able to perform extraction of the out of phase material in the recording and place it in the rear channels (DPLII might work, too). The advantages of this surround technique are that there's probably plenty of recordings already out there that were recorded with a blumlein technique (the important thing here is that the out of phase information is present in the recording), the surround sound can be derived upon playback and regular two channel media can be used, and it's by definition already compatible with regular stereo playback equipment (just like SQ and QS were / are). The disadvantage is that very few microphones offer a figure-8 pattern (the AKG 414 is probably the most well-known), and they're all expensive.....but I do remember seeing a website somewhere that had instructions for building a DIY microphone with a figure-8 pattern, it used two condenser capsules and an op-amp summing circuit for each microphone......also, good decoding equipment is expensive and hard to come by these days (anybody have a Tate II kicking around that they wanna sell me?)..... From: "Kenneth Dudzik" <kdudzik@dietrichdesigngroup.com> Subject: ISO Texas Tapers for Upcoming Arc Angels reunion shows Reply-To: <kdudzik@dietrichdesigngroup.com> Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 12:26:05 -0600 The Arc Angels (Double Trouble W/Charlie Sexton & Doyle Bramhall II) are doing a few reunion gigs in February and I'm looking for someone who might be able to tape the shows. Here are the dates: 2/4/05 - gypsy ballroom dallas 2/5/05 - mardi gras galveston 2/26/05 - stubb's BBQ, austin Most likely they will not allow open taping so it'll have to be a stealth job. If anyone can catch these shows, please drop me a line. Thanks! Ken

If there are any local tapers available, please let me know as I would love to hear a tape of this show. 02/23/05 Wednesday CARNEGIE HALL NEW YORK Andy Summers / Guitar Benjamin Verdery / Guitar Concerto for Classical and Electric Guitar by Ingram Marshall More info: http://www.americancomposers.org/rel2004_05.htm Thanks, Ken
From: Adam Smith <adaml@lanset.com> Subject: Derek Trucks Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 11:38:30 -0800 Hello, I haven't been able to access the BTAT lately. Does anyone know if Derek Trucks allows board feeds? Thanks, Adam
From: "Martin" <martinwk@ptd.net> Subject: ORTF Question Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 18:33:19 -0500 > My question is this: > > Is it better to point my mics at the stacks or run ORTF with my mics not > pointing at the stacks? What about the 3:1 rule? 28' away from a stage seems very far to me, particularly when it is described as a "small club." The whole situation sounds like a phase nightmare to me. Might I suggest moving the mics closer to the stage so that the distance to the bar area is three times the distance to the stage. Since you have cardioids, I would strongly suggest using a coincident X/Y pattern. I have recorded over 180 classical sessions (and one honky tonk bar band) with this pattern and have never been disappointed. -M

You are entirely too far away. For a 110 degree setup, you would need to be about 8 feet off the stage, or about 14 feet in a direct line from each stack. Move closer. Your setup will be pointing at the stacks now, not the walls/bar. Because you will be closer you will eliminate reflections and chatty bar people. The signal to noise ratio (music to chatters) will be much more appropriate. The strange phase problems should go away too. Good Luck -M
