From: Clark Guy <guy.clark@siemens.com> Subject: RE: Re-use of dat tapes Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 11:44:40 -0600 HI, Per! I've used almost NO new DATs for my last thirteen years of DAT recording of my orchestral and brass band concerts. I've purchased nearly all my dats (over a thousand, tapes, I think, over the years) from Cassette House, who has offered "used once" tapes that had been used to set up computer DAT backup drives in the factory at a substantial discount over "new" tapes. (yes, these are DDS tapes, not "audio" tapes) I've never had a DAT tape fail on me unless I did something stupid to it, so I'm pretty confident that as long as your used tape played well when last played, it should record equally as well. My DAT recorders are two old Sony TCD-D3s and one Tascam DA-30 MkII, should it matter.... Hope your experience is as good as mine has been!! Guy Clark <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> From: pstoltz1@tiscali.se Subject: Re-use of dat tapes Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 07:55:12 +0100 Have a question regarding re-use of a dat tape. I am lucky enough to live where audio dat tapes cost (if I am lucky enough to find any in the store here) around 20$ a piece (5-6$ for dds) so I am wondering if there are big issues with re-using a tape that has been recorded on once. Will a tape that has been erased on a degausing machine perform like a new tape? Interested in opinions. I always try getting the quality as good as it can get, so if this is a quality drop or risk of, I won't do it. Thanks for your help! -Per

From: Nick Georges <nick@nickspicks.com> Subject: re: Great stereo of people in the crowd, or the band? Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 14:47:11 -0500 Quoted:*************************** "the sound of the room just blooms when individual members of the crowd start yelling requests. It sounds like the first "recognizable" "Dark Star" request is coming from about 20 feet in front and to my right. Then there are a pair of "Dark Stars" about 2 rows behind and 10 feet to my right. Then someone on my left, fairly close, yells "Box of Rain" loud enough to bounce off the walls!!!!!!" This, I'm afraid, demonstrates one of the primary problems with recording "stereo" from the audience, regardless of the quality of the mics, whether using 2 mics of 5 mics, whether recording from right in front of the soundboard or from inside the bathroom. Regardless of how good your gear is, the main "stereo" you pick up will be the crowd, not the band. The second "stereo" thing you might pick up is the "sound" of the room from that exact spot, but this "sound" really isn't an attribute of the music being played that night; it's just how your mics interacted with that exact spot in the room and the crowd around you; ie, you could create a room sound just as appropriate and much cleaner in "post-production". Which is why, I have recently been making most of my recordings with PZM mics on the stage. Of course, this cannot be done for all sorts of shows, and works best only if the sound really is coming from the instruments on the stage, but, these cheap mics can give you "real stereo" of the band very easily. end quote:*************************************** I look at this from another poit of view. What we make are stereo ambient recordings. That is a stereo picture of what is going on sonicaly around you. You are recording the room, never the band. The band is in that room...as is the PA, the crowd..etc, and all the plus'es and minus's that go with each of these things. Many of the "stereo" recordings we make are of a P.A. running MONO. So go figure. making stereo recordings from on stage is great...and SBD feeds for the vocals ...hey, you've got it made. But you are multi-tracking and mixing on the spot into two channels...from several. Speaking for myself, those opportunities are rare w/the bands I see and record. My two channel recordings are in stereo. I hear left info and right info. And yes, its usualy someone yelling. Sometimes its the placement of the performers laid out in-between my speakers as they were in front of the microphones. That of course, is only if the engineer mixed that way to begin with (from a PA standpoint), or if you are close enough to the stage to bypass the PA and pick up the ambient stage sound. In any case, the stereo recording allows for my brain to paint a mental picture of how it was. Crowd, PA..room acoustics...and all. And its as real a stereo recording as anything else. You sound like you are talking about and striving for a studio, controlled, processed type of sound in your recordings. And you also sound like you are getting them. But, try and do what you are doing w/a band like Govt. Mule. It ain't happenin' That said... put me down for some of that 50's jazz.
From: Tom McGee <aos@dayday.org> Subject: Stereo recordings Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:38:58 -0500 Gary sez: "When I only used 2 PZMs, you want to put them pretty close together (12-20 inches) to reduce the "hole in the middle" effect. But I'm now using 3 PZMs so I can space them farther apart, and mix the middle mic in the middle." Boundary mics often fix the problem if you just can't get the sound you want using other types of mics. The Audio Technica AT-849 is a stereo version with an XY pattern.

From: Aaron Thorne <aaront@mac.com> Subject: re: 32khz recording Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 14:12:07 -0800 The easiest way to hear this is to run audio through the mic input with the dat deck set to monitor the signal (passthrough, whatever) and then run audio out of that to your stereo (headphone jack, digital, whatever). you can switch back and forth between LP and SP modes (on my m1 at least) and you can hear a difference. On studio recorded stuff the difference is important. On stealth live recordings in a packed club where the higher frequencies are largely cut out by people walking by and other stuff, if those frequencies are even pumped out by the sound system, the difference is much less noticeable. In addition, if all this happens when you're waiting on a new shipment of dat tapes to arrive in the mail, or the paycheck to pay for some, it might be better to bite the bullet and record twice as much stuff on the blanks you have left. This has been my situation many times and i have made some of my best recordings in 32khz LP. I have made some of my worst recordings in 48khz SP. I have made no recordings when I had no tape. aaron
From: Peter <drchen_2@yahoo.com> Subject: Best Row(s) for Sound at Palace of Fine Arts Theater? Reply-To: drchen_2@yahoo.com Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 16:18:13 -0800 (PST) Hi all Bay Area tapers, Anyone have any recommendations of what row(s) are best for sound at the Palace of Fine Arts theater in San Francisco? What rows or other pitfalls to avoid? How tight is security? BTW, the type of music to be experienced is electric jazz (Coltrane Ascension 40th). From: "Mark Lynn" <lynnzzz@comcast.net> Subject: emphasis Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 20:00:34 -0500 I'm looking to transfer a 48 kHz master DAT I taped to CD going Sony R500 ->M Audio Audiophile 2496 ->Soundforge 7.0(rec/re-sample.) It's an older tape with emphasis on. Should I worry about getting rid of the emphasis and if so how? Also to make it even more complicated the right channel is week and distorted. There was a power issue with the right channel and it just sounds like shit. The other channel however sounds great. I was FOB in the sweet spot and I have not seen another source circulate from this show. So it's definately worth the trouble. At least for me. Should I just cut the one channel out and replace it with the other one for the entire show? The bad channel sounds pretty much like shit and makes the recording almost un-listenable. Any one hear ever faced a similar problem and do anything other than just simply replace the bad channel? Thanks. Mark Lynn
From: "Tony" <adestefanis@wi.rr.com> Subject: Edirol UA5 for sale - w/ power mod Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2005 20:00:04 -0600 I am selling my Edirol UA-5. I modified the power for portable use. I have 2 batteries for the unit with about 3-4 hours per battery. There is also a battery charger of course, you can use the batteries individually or at the same time while in the field. I was looking to get 210$ + shipping for the unit and batteries. It's in perfect condition as I have used it once portable and a hand full of times at home... that is why I am selling it. I can send pictures or answer any questions. Thanks. Tony

I really would like to get $150 for it, but will entertain serious counter offers. Contact me directly via email if interested. Thanks.
