From: "Fredbob Jackson" <audiowannabe@hotmail.com> Subject: laptop to and from M-1 Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 17:18:22 +0000 What is the best way to do digital transfers between a laptop and a Sony M-1? I've seen a couple of boxes that boast optical SPDIF to/from USB, but I believe the M-1 uses a coaxial SPDIF, and not optical. But I'm not even sure. Anyone with any experience doing this? I can't change sound cards in the laptop, so I'm stuck with the USB or firewire lines. From: Jean Lerond <lerond@gmail.com> Subject: Palace of Fine Arts Reply-To: Jean Lerond <lerond@gmail.com> Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 12:30:26 -0800 The PoFA is a *very* wide venue, so that you can be fairly far off-center and still be inbetween the L&R PA stacks. There is also a center-fill PA to make up for the width a bit. If you're closer than the 4th row or so, then the center PA will be aimed over your head. I wouldn't want to sit more than half-way back, but seating depends on when you buy tickets! Security there is typically mellow, but it's quite unusual for SF Jazz to allow anyone to tape (I've only seen open taping at one show of theirs over the past six or seven years). -jean
From: Tom McCreadie <mccreadi@xs4all.nl> Subject: Re: emphasis Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 00:02:19 +0100 >Mark in #993: > It's an older tape with emphasis on. Should I worry about getting rid of >the emphasis and if so how? Absolutely - fix it or your cd will sound shrill with a 10 dB high end boost. If you're confining yourself to making cdr's, then the simplest way is just to leave the emphasis intact but to set pre-emphasis flags when you burn to cdr. Every cd player will then automatically demphasise and play normally - for it's part of the red book standard - but you should label those cdr's fully, though, to avoid grief for any unsuspecting future folks trying to extract audio from the disks. The easiest way to insert pre-emphasis flags is to work with cue files and burn with programs such as CDRWIN, Plextools, Nero, EAC etc. Edit the cue file ASCII to add the line FLAGS PRE between each TRACK command and the subsequent INDEX command. If your cd has multiple tracks, you should require exactly the same number of 'FLAGS PRE' - unless you prefer a "hybrid" cd <g>. Tom Tinnitus is a pain in the neck
From: Geoff/Morgan <geofry@speedsite.com> Subject: Looking to swap Sony DG90Ps for 60m Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 19:04:12 -0600 Hey all, Odd request. I have 30 boxed(in lots of 5), unused, shrink wrapped Sony DG90Ps 90m DATs. My decks don't like these so I'm looking for someone willing to swap. I'll do all 30 tapes for 15 60 meter, Sony, Maxell, or TDK. Again, all unused, still in the cartons. I'm not trying to unload crap but the decks have been acting up with these. This is what I get for buying 50 of them. thanks, Geoff
From: "Joshua " <josh@unified-tech.com> Subject: dangit Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 21:10:12 -0600 So I=92ve been archiving CDR=92s and DAT=92s to FLAC files and then to DVD-R=92s. Works great, except I=92ve got a few CD=92s that were = over-burned to 81 minutes or so that I=92ve extracted as individual tracks and now I can=92t burn them back to CD=92s (they were originally overburned using = a large .wav file and a cue sheet). Any bright ideas on burning these without decompressing and pasting them all back together?=20 While I=92m here I=92ll pick your brains on one more question. I=92m = finally getting a handle on my collection. The DVD=92s are numbered 2005-01, 2005-02, 2005-03, etc and I enter the information into an Excel spreadsheet. I have fields for date, band, venue, city, DVD # and source; what=92s next in creating a spreadsheet tool so that I can = search by each of those fields? =20 Thanks! =20 -Josh --=20 No virus found in this outgoing message. From: pstoltz1@tiscali.se Subject: ISO: Taper for WE-03-03-2005-London @ Fabric Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 09:54:46 +0100 Looking to see if anybody is able to tape the norwegian heavy psych-rock band WE March 3rd in London, UK @ Fabric. For info about the band, www.werock.org is a good place to start. WE's laters release "Smugglers" is a killer spaced out heavy rock album which I recommend you checking out. Produced by Chris Goss who also guests on the title track. The band is taper friendly. Video and audio. If you tape, then get in touch. Have lots to trade including several masters. For you who did not get tickets for QOTSA, get out and catch this band!
From: JH <kc7fys@yahoo.com> Subject: Utterly off-topic. Anybody know of a "letter service"? Date: Thu, 17 Feb 2005 22:54:44 +0900 I'll keep it minimal: Anybody know of any service anywhere where I can submit text and pay or something, and they send it in a paper letter via USPS? I've always wondered if this service exists anywhere for any price. I type a letter or anything on my PC, and it arrives in someone's USPS mail. Answer off-list of course. Thanks, Jonathan
