I am a former FOB Schoeps taper that is interested in
liquidating my DAT collection. I simply do not find
myself listening to these recordings anymore, all of
which are high-quality (mostly Grateful Dead but also
including U2, Sting, Dylan, Van Morrison, Who, Prince,
etc.). As such, I would like to sell the tapes at the
going rate for media to someone who will enjoy them.
I have compiled a list of the tapes with as much
detail info as I have or can remember, which is
summarized below and can be forwarded by email upon
request. I am only interested in selling the entire
collection of 125 tapes in one transaction. If you
are interested, please send me an offer.
Also, I have four DATRax storage cases that are in
great/like-new condition. Please send me an offer if
you are interested in these.
Thanks!

Please forgive me if this has been covered a million times already or not, I have been
away for awhile (from the list that is) and I've learned that everyone is sort of
heading towards the whole computer digital thing and am thinking of converting my
entire DAT list to shn or flac. So obviously, my first question is what is everyone
using today? I hear FLAC is the choice of most DAT-heads, but am not sure. I've used
shn and have not had any troubles with it.
My next, major question is, what is the best way to transfer from my DAT to the
computer. I have a MIDIMAN interface from A Audio that I am using to patch into my
computer from my Sony D5 using a patch cable from Core Sound. I have successfully
transferred some music to my computer but have noticed that perhaps the transfers
might not have been what the should be quailty-wise. Might be my imagination as I am a
perfectionist. I guess my reasons for asking are because I recall a thread a while
back that discussed this issue and if I'm not mistaken I recall something in regards
to the transfer might not really be a true transfer but rather a conversion from
digital to analog and back back, which sort of defeats the whole purpose of digital
thing.
So anyway, if anyone has any comments or suggestion I would appreciate them. Thanks.

mp3 the dark side: imo this is a bright, shining side side esp. for travelling.
ipod or not, do yourself the favour of encoding in vbr (variable bit
rate). this is *much* better and/or *much* smaller than fixed bit
rates.
the ipod strangely can't do it on its own but any computer will do it
and it will easily double your capacity..
the link is interesting but i think a bit outdated as vbr is not even
mentioned there, yet.
may the force be with you and enough power

Subject: how high up to place mics?

i taped a show out doors last summer. i used dpa4061's. these are
onmi's. i put windscreens on them. there was no wind. i was in front
of a stack about 70' away. i put the mics up 7' above head level. i
still got mic phasing/whoosing like people were walking in front of the
mics. the mics were line of site with the cabinets, no obstructions.
there were people below them. any idea why i would not get a clean
sound? thx avps@erols.com

I purchased this deck, the "home version of the
Panasonic SV3700" (similar except for Pro features
i.e. SCMS), in 1991. It has been intermittently and
lightly used since 1993, so I've decided to put it up
for sale. The deck has been well maintained and I
have had no issues/problems with it. I can send
pictures of the deck via email upon request.
If you are interested, please email me an offer.
Thanks!

Danny T wonders:

Check!
> I'm making sure

> Thursday night.
I had no idea The Music _were_ at one point cool with taping; had I known, I
wouldn't have gone stealth (AT-853s > SPSB-6 (160 Hz bass roll-off) > JB3)
last Thursday...
Good-sounding and -looking band (singer's a dead ringer for, and sounds
like, Robert Plant circa January 1969), but a bit of a one-trick pony. After
30 min of being pummelled, you wonder whether they're going to vary their
shtick any. Kasabian were much more "musical." If I had to compare them to
the mid-late 80s Brit-rock recyclers that they're, uh, recycling, I'd say
The Music are The Cult to Kasabian's The Mission.
Good luck with the recording! Watch your levels; both bands are LOUD. I
pulled three different shows in the same venue over four nights last week;
only in one instance was I required to drop my gain all the way to -6 dB.
I'll let you guess which.

Hi all,
I'm retiring from trading, and selling off the remainder of my DATs. I'=
ve traded with tons of great people over the years, and met a good bunch =
of you too, a big thanks goes to everyone who's helped me out over the =
years, it's been fun. The majority are on Maxell HS-4 60's and 90's, =
there's a few other brands in there as well. I really haven't done much =
trading over the last 6 years, nor do I find myself listening to too much =
anymore. I'm letting everything go at a very low price, less than $1.50 a =
tape. I have 665 tapes plus 28 sealed HS-4 90's and 16 HS-4 60's for a =
total of 709 tapes, I'd like to get $1000 for the lot. Majority of my =
stuff is Grateful Dead, but there are several other bands as well. If you'=
d like a list please email me. I'd like this to all go to one person but =
will consider breaking it up. If you're located in the Southern =
California area and would like some DAT decks or DAT holders (they hold =
360 tapes I believe offhand) let me know. I'll be selling 2 or 3 of my DA-=
20's.
Thanks - Mark
