Note that iTunes is now cross platform and an excellent converter to all compressed forms. Then there is Apple lossless, also available in iTunes. As long as you have the full WAV or AIFF file, it probably doesn't make much difference what compression you use, since the iPod is mostly for convenience anyway. Sure be nice if sometime we could use an iPod for recording... ------------------------------ From: Bob Ramstad Subject: Re: Best Way to Transefr from DAT to Computer Reply-To: rramstad@alum.mit.edu Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2005 10:30:26 -0800 > From: "Vernon Webb" > Subject: Best Way to Transefr from DAT to Computer > Date: Sun, 27 Feb 2005 14:52:58 -0500 > > Please forgive me if this has been covered a million times already or not, I have been > away for awhile (from the list that is) and I've learned that everyone is sort of > heading towards the whole computer digital thing and am thinking of converting my > entire DAT list to shn or flac. Thanks. > This is a very very complicated question. I can tell you what I use. I have an audio capable DAT drive that I purchased from Mashtek. I have it connected to a box running a version of Linux (White Box Enterprise Linux) but any version of Linux would do. I use read_dat to import from the DATs. This avoids the whole soundcard and timing issue entirely, and as a bonus, the DATs are read in at 2x normal speed. If you don't want to administer a Linux box permanently, there are bootable Linuxes like Knoppix which run from CD-ROM. With a little bit of work, you could probably come up with a system that would boot nicely from CD for Linux, and otherwise would boot Windows from a hard drive. Use FAT32 for the partition where you put the audio data, and it can be seen from both Windows and Knoppix. (I haven't done this myself, but I bet it would be pretty straightforward.) Once you've got the material in the computer as WAV files, there's no end of what you can do with them. I do prefer FLAC to SHN because FLAC accomodates tagging of artist, title and stuff like that more easily. It is important when doing the transfers to note if the source has preemphasis and use a tool like sox to deemphasize the resulting WAV if the original had preemphasis. You'll probably also want to break the resulting WAVs into tracks. I like to import entire tapes all at once into one massive file and then break the tracks under Windows using CD Wave, but there are tools to do that under Linux. It's important to use a tool that breaks on sector boundaries so the resulting files sound right when burned to audio CD. Basically this is a super complicated area, but this is a thumbnail of what I use and how I handle things. I've also found out there that many many many DATs have in fact been mastered to FLAC or SHN already, and so it is often easier to trade for something than master it yourself... I hope this helps. Obviously many details would require extensive comments on my part to make clear... but this is an outline, and frankly filling in the details is part of the learning process. Maybe I'll write up a web page someday... -- Bob ------------------------------ From: "dwb" Subject: shure or etymotic Reply-To: Date: Mon, 28 Feb 2005 15:51:16 -0500 Again, looking to tap collective experience: Shure or Etymotic bud-earphones.. If so, please contact me privately. Also, has anyone ever sync'd the released SBD to a VHS or DVD of the 10/31/94? Does anyone have, even a decent copy of just the Loaded set or the whole show? Please let me know.
