I am looking for a TCD-D8 in good working condition.
Please let me know.
I've been hearing a lot about the Edirol-R1 but never seen one.
Somebody earlier had recording problem using condenser mikes.
I am not clear about it's SNR and dynamic range.
Any info is appreciated, is it worth $400?
Joe

i have 2 concure w/ bob in that a dds drive is the ezest way ive found 2
get the dat data 2the computer, altho im not sure Y 2 push the whole
linux thing unless that program is free, cuz there r 2 decent windows
progs that do the job fine & at least dat2wav is fairly ez 2 find 4free
the other prog is vdat.
as 4 setup the drive & the scsi card r readily avalible i got mine 4
under $40 4 years ago, & there r quite a few sites that tell ya how 2
set it up i think 1 of the guys who posts here often has a page that
tells ya how.
heres 1 that links 2 most others tho:

I realize this is a DAT list, but there's no such thing as an analog
discussion group anymore I and figured someone might still own one of
these.
I picked up a used Tascam 103 deck in order to use a decent quality
cassette deck for transferring a lot of irreplaceable analog tapes to
digital. (Amaazing how hard is is to find a decent used cassette deck
that's not just way too expensive... people apparently still willing
to pay $150+ for a pro deck on ebay that's 10 or 15 years old!!)
Anyway it obviously has no manual. I'm not sure how to adjust the bias
controls on the deck. I wondered if anyone either has a manual for the
deck they'd be willing to scan (at least the relevant sections) or
could explain/direct me to info on setting bias correctly. It has a
single "BIAS" knob with "REF" labelled at the center position, and two
other knobs labelled "PRESET" for the L&R channel that are near the
bias knob with range "MIN" to "MAX". I am not sure if these are also
for bias adjustment or for something else.
Sorry for the non-DAT related content (except that the purpose of this
is to create bits from sine waves...) and any suggestions or help
appreciated.

I use this method too, and find that it works very well. I do it using
an audio-capable Sony SDT-9000 DAT drive, and using Mac OS X with a
program I wrote, based on the code for read_dat. The program should
work with other drives as well. I'll be glad to provide a copy of the
program to anyone who requests it.
