They have been cool with it in the past, but I always
ask permission from someone the band at "each show",
because the policy could change from tour to tour.
I'd dig a copy btw :)

Subject: Tascam 103 analog deck manual?
Date: Wed, 2 Mar 2005 13:19:39 -0500
Hi James,
I am not familiar with and don't have the manual for the Tascam 103, but =
if
your tapes are really valuable, you have to pay the price for a decent
cassette deck (unless you find other source than ebay). I can recommend y=
ou
to join "naktalk" at naks.com, as you can get valuable info about cassett=
e
decks and how to use them. =
What you'll probably need is a deck with adjustable azimuth (head-angle
alignment). The bias control is for recording only, has no function for
playback.
Hope this helps,
_Fuad

I realize this is a DAT list, but there's no such thing as an analog
discussion group anymore I and figured someone might still own one of
these.
I picked up a used Tascam 103 deck in order to use a decent quality
cassette deck for transferring a lot of irreplaceable analog tapes to
digital. (Amaazing how hard is is to find a decent used cassette deck
that's not just way too expensive... people apparently still willing
to pay $150+ for a pro deck on ebay that's 10 or 15 years old!!)
Anyway it obviously has no manual. I'm not sure how to adjust the bias
controls on the deck. I wondered if anyone either has a manual for the
deck they'd be willing to scan (at least the relevant sections) or
could explain/direct me to info on setting bias correctly. It has a
single "BIAS" knob with "REF" labelled at the center position, and two
other knobs labelled "PRESET" for the L&R channel that are near the
bias knob with range "MIN" to "MAX". I am not sure if these are also
for bias adjustment or for something else.
Sorry for the non-DAT related content (except that the purpose of this
is to create bits from sine waves...) and any suggestions or help
appreciated.

I would like to buy a set of extension/active cables for these microphones
and possibly the ck91 and ck92 caps depending on the price for those.
thanks,
Sanjay

Due to receiving several requests, I've set up a web page from which you
can download my program. You can get it at:
http://buzzlabs.com/~peter/datxtract/ There is more information there
as well.

Don't know if it is the best, but it has worked for me
for many years.
Also depends on how much you are willing to spend for
your connection as the add ons always cost $$$.
I use a Lynx1 soundcard that has XLR cables connected
to it. They just plug into the back of my DAT and
transfer via the DAT's digital output right to my Hard
Drive. I don't worry about Analog to Digital
converters, because I am keeping the digital signal
digital all along.
I upload the information to my HD with Sound Forge
software. I am using version 4.0 but I think they are
up to 6.0 and when I get some cash I just may upgrade
myuself.
Sound Forge permits the editing of the .wav files,
allows you to index them (i.e.: inster the track
positions) while watching the sound in the form of an
osiliscope reading of the sound's wave forms, thus by
the changing patterns you can find the precise start /
end of a song and mark your tracks accordingly.
I then burn to CD with one of the tools in Sound Forge
called CD Architect.

There are three basic classes of ways to convert dat tapes.
1. A hardware device that reads dat directly into the computer
(computer dat drive), with appropriate software.
2. Play the dat tape on a dat deck, take the output into the
computer. (2a: digital, 2b: analog. Don't go there.)
3. Convert the dat tape externally to something the computer can read
directly. E.g. Dat deck into CDR burner, dat deck into PDAudio on
a Pocket PC recording on a PCMCIA disk.

I imagine they're still pro-taping. Haven't taped them in a few years,
but never had any trouble the few times I have taped them.

Just wondering if anyone knows the filmer of the Tower Records acoustic
concert The Grays performed when their album was released. I have a very poor
version of it but would like something better. Would also love to find any other
Grays or Jason Falkner on VHS or DVD. I have one master from IPO in 2001 but
plan to film him in a couple of weeks at SXSW. If anyone is going to that
show and can try to get a SBD patch, that'd be great. Please contact me. Rawk!
Thanks,
Wes

Kind of a long shot, but I'm in search for an
upgrade on video for this show:
Kyuss-AUG-30-1995-Helsinki, Finland @ Icehall
Short set, about 26minutes. Need an upgrade from my
pretty grainy copy. If anyone has any info, I would
really appreciate it.
Thanks!
PS! Always looking for good quality The Mars Volta
video material. Get in touch if you have any.

submitting for a friend...contact him at email below:
I am selling my absolute *mint* condition V2. This was one of the last units Grace made, and is only about 2 and 1/2 years old. It looks as if it was just taken out of the box. It performs flawlessly. I still have the original box and manual, and will include them if I can locate them. I will also include a $100 set of Ixos Gamma XLR interconnects. Please get in touch if you are interested. You can contact me at: gottajiboo40@mac.com
Thanks!
