Hi DAT-Heads,
If there are any Australian tapers reading, please let me know if there is a
chance you could tape any of these shows. CW is taper friendly audience and
sbd hookups are welcome. Just get there early and talk to his manager.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

an oldie but goodie topic.

1. sounds good because it could be done in 2x speed. but afaik it gives
up on audio-wise error correction, so if your deck has an error count
above 0 for your tapes i don't think it is such a good a good idea after all.
Of course in theory the software could try to do some error
correction, but does it? will it be a match for the chips in your deck?
i think not!
2a. is the standard way possible with many cards. note: 2b (analog) is
not really different from using a resampling card; i'm not sure about
dynamics, but the analog domain will not introduce bad old noise, as
there is no noisy medium; so it could be even better than 1.
3. sounds like a terrible hassle if you want to get it right on the 1st
try with cds and like an expensive way with flash cards.

I'm amazed that no one's still doing it this way:
Play DAT back into computer through a digital I/O card such as the Zefiro
ZA-2.
I have a Tascam DA-30 MkII that I use mostly for playback only (I record on
one of two good ol' Sony TCD-D3 DAT recorders). I connect the Tascam to the
Zefiro card via the AES/EBU connectors. I also have a good Sony minidisc
deck that I connect via the coaxial RCA connectors, leaving the optical open
for future reference.
While this takes real time to play back, I usually do this when I get home
at night and let it go overnight.
Now, there are USB devices that have digital I/O (as well as analog I/O)
such as the ESI U24X. While I haven't used the digital I/O on my U24X, the
analog section works fine, so I have no concerns about using it instead of
the Zefiro card. These USB devices are pretty reasonable in cost, like
less than US$150.
Hope this helps!!!

Hey,
anyone planning on taping Shellac 4/13 Minneapolis at the 1st Avenue or
4/14 Milwaukee at Todd Wehr Hall? I'm willing to cover ticket cost,
dats and batteries if you want. These need to be stealth.
thanks,
Geoff

If you have a DAT with only Toslink out,and a card with a Coax in, you
may need to get a C02, or other converter.
I usually use SF6.0, and I like to hopefully keep nominal levels around
-6, but peaks can absolutely not touch 0.0 db, so I occasionally have to
set EQ's.
Personally, I know cassettes are not the crap they are painted as. I
have a bunch of cassettes I recorded from CD's for listening in my
vehicle. I own 2 3 head Onkyo's, one the TA 2070 that I was told was
built by Nak, and a TA 2056. Both are nice 3 head units. I'd sell the
2056 for a fair price.
When I listened to the cassettes, and a-b'ed them to the CD player, I
preferred the sound of the cassettes to the CD. I am very biased
against listening to CD's, With Reel ToReel being my favorite listening
source, and DAT and LP almost equal to reels. For the narrow minded and
under expose, there are vast quantitie of LP's around, that don't sound
like your older sisters Paul Revere and The Raiders records.
