From my experience: I have seen error rates go both ways. i.e. the Sony DDS-3 drives have some of the best heads ever put into a DDS drive and I have been able to read errored audio tapes in this DDS3 drive without any errors. My Panasonic, Tascam, Fostex, and Sony decks all can't play the tapes with out audible diginoise (all in the same spots). The RIP in the DDS3 is clean as a whistle. Also the Seagate/Conner/Archive DDS2 and DDS1 drives do not have these low error heads so the errors will show up in these rips. So if you go with DDS DAT ripping you will need to get a Sony SDT-9000 drive - preferably SGI with 13.1 FW. When I was using DDS2 drives and I found a tape with a lot of errors I would clone it with pro-decks and then rip the clone with the DDS drive - this only worked for me about 1/4 or less of the time (the errors where to bad that any deck I tried would clean them up). It is important to note that the software error correction with DAT2WAV (not sure with VDAT and others) is not very robust and error correction on a Pro-DAT deck will be superior than the DAT2WAV DDS option. Over all I have had excellent results with DDS3 drives and DAT2WAV. For the time savings I can't see a better way to transfer. -Richard
From: "Vernon Webb" <vernon@cwnj.com> Subject: DAT to WAV Date: Fri, 4 Mar 2005 16:01:12 -0500 OK, so we've covered the idea of how to get DAT on to a PC. So for the next part of the question. DATs are 48k and CDs are 44k. So what format do most people RIP their wavs as 48 or 41? I can see the benefit of RIPPING as 48, to preserve the quality of the DAT original format, but 48s can't be ripped to CD. So do we rip as 48, convert to 44, then RIP to CD? Huge job, especially once you've broken the tracks down and so forth. Of course we can keep the entire wav as 48k, break down the tracks, save then convert to 44k and then to FLAC, but damn, the work and the amount of disk space. My intended purpose is to create FLAC files, so again, what is everyone else doing? Thanks
