I must comfess that until these recent pre-emphasis/DAT>WAV discussions I
have simply transferred my recordings to .wav (via Delta DIO 2496) and
burned away. I have searched the web and the manual for my M1 and have
been unable to find any info regarding when pre-emphasis is applied. Is
this an option that is only available on certain recorders, or only when
recording at 48 kHz, or all DAT recordings, or what?!?
Also, is there any way to know if downloaded .shn/.flac files need the
pre-emphasis flag set when burning to audio CD?
Thanks for any info,
Jim

Hey Everybody,
I've got about 70 dats to unload. Mostly Maxell, Sony and Kao 60 and 90m DDS
(all were new - recorded once). Would like them to go to one person. Asking
$1.50 each, I'll cover the shipping. Artists include:
-Grateful Dead
-KVHW
-Zero
-Phil & Friends
-Pat Metheny
-Ratdog
Email me for a complete listing of all shows including source and genealogy
info. All have printed J-cards, setlists and have track ID's written on the
dats since I've transferred all of these to CD-R.
Thanks,
Paul

Most dat decks (including the M1) will copy pre-emphasis on the
digital in, but not create it on analog in.
The Casio DA-1 always wrote pre-emphasis on recording from analog.
(It also had only 15 bits of accuracy; it's a _very_ obsolete deck.)
A few other decks and A/D converters allowed the user to set emphasis.
Some PCM (pre-dat) devices used emphasis.

If that isn't in the .txt file very prominently, somebody needs to get
flamed.

OK, so now I have successfully transferred a DAT to the PC. The DAT is actually a copy
of a master cassette recording of a show that a friend recorded. I have transferred it
to DAT VIA the normal processes. However, if you turn the sound up, naturally you heat
tape hiss. CoolEdit Pro has a setting that is called "Noise Reduction" and another
called "Hiss Reduction". More than likely I know what the answer to this is, but I
figured let me check anyway: should I use either of these options? I would think that
the "Hiss Reduction" would be a good option, however I know that many people are
always crying to leave the show as close to original as possible. What are your
thoughts?

Having never been to this venue before, I need a stealth report for the
Starland Ballroom in Sayerville,NJ. Can anyone tell me what it will take to
get through the door, security procedures inside the venue, etc? If it
makes any difference, it will be a heavy metal type of show (see my next
post if you're curious). Need to know by Wednesday afternoon.....any help
would be much appreciated!

Hidden Hand is also about to tour soon, with Mastodon and Burning Brides.
This tour will be through just about everywhere except for the northwest and
east coast. Headliners Mastodon have been making quite a buzz as of late,
but what I would really be looking for are the Hidden Hand sets. Hidden
Hand would probably best be compared to sort of a cross between Black
Sabbath and Motorhead, if you can imagine Tony Iommi and Lemmy on the same
stage. This should be a taping allowed show, if you run into problems with
venue staff, Wino of Hidden Hand should be able to verify that taping (both
audio and video) IS allowed. To the best of my knowledge, Mastodon also
allows taping. I don't really know much of anything about Burning Brides,
but I've been told that they're a 'Sabbath / MC5 / Stooges sort of
band.....this should be a GREAT triple bill for those of you here who enjoy
old-school heavy rock! Tourdates can be found here:
http://www.thehiddenhand.com/shows.php I'd really like to hear from anyone
who tapes any of these shows....I've traded or corresponded before with some
of you who are in about half of the places (NO, TX, AZ, CA, WI, and IL come
to mind....do I have to email you guys personally to convince you how
worthwhile this is?) this tour will hit, so I know you're out there.....the
shows should be reasonably priced, so don't miss out!
