From: James Treworgy <jamie@trewtech.com> Subject: Re: DAT-heads Digest #412 Reply-To: James Treworgy <jamie@trewtech.com> Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 12:17:30 -0500 Hiss reduction can be useful if done properly. Cool Edit Pro (now adobe audition) has very good functionality for doing this. But beware that you don't make the problem worse, as there can be audible artifacts as a result. If you can hear _anything_ unnatural after doing the noise reduction, then my feeling is it's not worth it. And, no matter what, I would keep an un-processed copy of the tape for archival -- since in the future as technology improves you'll surely be able to do a better job. My experience has been the best results come from using a moderate amount of hiss reduction (usually the hiss reduction function is better than the general "noise removal" function for analog tape hiss) can improve things somewhat without audible artifacts. But, just as many times, I'll listen to the before & after and conclude that the benenfit is pretty minor and not worth the "compromising" of the source. It really depends on the source and how bad it is. If it's a master analog, the hiss is probably not bad at all - I'd leave it alone.
From: acffh <morst@tds.net> Subject: RE: CoolEdit Pro - Cassette > DAT > WAV transfer LEAVE THE BITS ALONE Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 11:32:31 -0600 Leave the bits alone. If you are working at 16 bits, and want to do processing, the result will be less than 16 bits of accurate musical data. In other words, unless you are going in at a higher resoution, and processing at the high res mode, you will be losing audio. Let's look at it another way. Yesterday I attempted to use the Noise Reduction feature on Audacity to remove some tape hiss from a cassette mastered to DAT (Same exact thing you are discussing). I made 4 different noise-reduced versions, and gave a listening test to see which one I would pick. I kept the unprocessed one and here is why- When I played them back, I thought that the lightest use of the NR filter was acceptable, but I realized that if I just leave all 16 bits intact, then ANYONE could do the "fix" from the "original source" so why not let others have a shot at it. Now, if I had mastered the cassette at 24 bits, and wanted to process it down, and distribute the best 16. . . then the NR could be worth trying. .. but to use NR on a 16-bit source to make a 16-bit source with LESS ACCURACY (truth) is not something I plan to spend my time doing. Other thoughts are welcome, but as I see it, using digital NR at 16 bits on a 16-bit source is like EQ'ing a cassette copy and throwing away the master. Yeah, it might sound better than the master now, but is it REALLY the ULTIMATE fix??? -t On Mar 7, 2005, at 10:50 AM, Digestifier wrote: > > From: "Vernon Webb" <vernon@cwnj.com> > Subject: CoolEdit Pro - Cassette > DAT > WAV transfer > Date: Mon, 7 Mar 2005 07:47:05 -0500 > > OK, so now I have successfully transferred a DAT to the PC.
