The argument for "pure bits" is that then everyone can process the tapes themselves to their own liking. The problem with this argument is that the vast majority of people won't bother, and they'll just listen to, and redistribute, the tapes exactly the way they got them. I'm a big proponent of the idea that you should never send out a tape until you've done everything you can to make it sound the best. This is assuming that you have the expertise, and tools, and the monitoring system to judge the sound - but if you do - I'd much rather if YOU would NR, EQ, and edit the tape before sending it to me, so I can go right into the listening experience, as if I had bought the tape from the store. MORE SPECIFICALLY ON THE SUBJECT OF COOL EDIT NR. There is a specific trick necessary to make the "Noise Reduction" feature in Cool Edit work well, and that trick is to increase the FFT size. This will GREATLY reduce the "metallic" sound that the hiss becomes. I recommend a setting of 16K (the exact number is 16384). The other trick is to find a "noise sample" which contains all of the noise you want to remove, but nothing else - ie, no clicks or pops or talking and certainly no music. This can be useful not just to remove tape hiss but also pre-amp hiss and "room tone" and get down to just the music. If you are working on a tape with a great deal of noise, even if you do everything right, you will end up with a slight metallic sound as an artifact. I have decided, after much listening, that as long as the *music* sounds exactly right, I'm willing to put up with the *noise" sounding a little strange. You are basically trading a LOT of hiss for a LITTLE metallic sound, and I think this is a good trade-off. Of course, some people will disagree. There are also situations where massive noise reduction leaves the music a little dull. In this situations, I find that EQing the treble back up can solve the problem. You might ask, aren't you just turing back up the noise that you just reduced? Because the noise reduction is "intelligent", this is not the case. You might reduce the hiss by 15 or 20dB, and then turn the treble back up by 4-5dB, you are still getting a 10-15dB improvement in S/N. I've made a number of tapes of solo guitar which are hissy. This is very delicate music and I listened very hard to make sure the guitar after the NR/EQ sounded *exactly* the same as the guitar going in. Today, when I listen back to these tapes I'm amazed because I don't hear any problems - just a perfect guitar sound and no hiss - quite different from the original tapes which sounded more like a non-Dolby cassette. As always, YMMV, but if you use your tools properly and listen carefully to what you are doing, you can get superb results with the Cool Edit family of programs, and I would guess, with other programs using the same type of noise reduction. --Gary P.s. with Cool Edit Pro or Audition, and a relatively fast computer, you can actually listen to / adjust NR settings in realtime, which makes it much easier to evaluate noise redution than it was just a few years ago. ------------------------------ From: Mark Subject: U2 Tapers group Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 18:22:14 -0800 (PST) If you are a taper and would like to trade from master tapes from other tapers please check this link out. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/U2-2005-tapers/ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
