Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 11:10:45 -0700 Thank you Steve for a very detailed and informative message on comparison of the Marantz PMD 660 and the Edirol R-1. The info you've shared is very helpful. I just want to offer my opinion on a couple of things you mention, in the spirit of more details relating to the R-1: >From: Stephen Bezruchka >Subject: A Marantz in the Hand or an Edirol in the bush? >Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 07:57:31 -0800 (PST) > > >The deficiencies of the R1, to me, include no ALC, no visual calibration >of recording levels, and too many playback effects, metronome and tuner >that suggest this unit was designed for a budding musician. Although there isn't an ALC in the R-1 in the most general sense, there is a limiter that (when enabled) kicks in at -9dB below FS, and it seems to compress by a factor of 2 or more. Clipping is still possible at extremely high levels, but it takes effort. The attack is very fast and the decay slower than I would like (for music recording), and the user cannot set these time constants. As for visual calibration, there is a single set of "bars" that appear (somewhat slow responding but accurate) for the higher of the two channels being recorded. The calibration of these bars is available from Edirol and I've pasted a bit of paper on the panel to show the levels (from < 50 dBFS to 0 dB FS in 16 unequal steps. Not perfect to be sure, but adequate for my needs. The playback effects are also recording effects as well, but they are not used (by me at least). One more other small difference - Steve reports that the PMD 660 requires AC power to download data via the USB port. The R-1 will run on either batteries or AC for this function. One question I had was the 1 GB CF card - is that a limit in the PMD 660? Should be compatible with larger cards, but I can't find any info on this point. Also what I could find indicates that the mic preamp noise floor might be around -50dbFS, which may be a factor for some folks to consider for different applications. Again, thank you Steve for the good info. Having a small unit with phantom power and XLR mic inputs is a real treat. Best wishes, David Holtkamp Los Alamos, NM ------------------------------ From: Stephen Bezruchka Subject: Details on A Marantz in the Hand Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 10:41:33 -0800 (PST) In Response to David Holtkamp's querries: The specs in the manual say: S/N ratio (IEC-A) line 80 dB, Mic 60 dB and Dynamic Range 80 dB, with Frequency REsponse 16,000 Hz (-0.5dB) [sic] Mic insput sensitivity 1.2mVrms/6.5kohms Don't know where you got the preamp noise floor info (I seached everywhere to get details as I could and then wondered if this was the right decision), but I think the preamp isn't great. And it isn't the quietest when I used the mic attenuator as I noted. But good enough for me. The recording time chart has card size to 4GB and I think the unit will take anything you put there. But a limit of 999 tracks. Also MicroDrives. With mono mp3 and 4GB, you are looking at 141 hours (yawn)! Also it is USB-2. One other neat feature is a remote control with a peak level indicator, record and pause, that is a TRRRS connector. It is back ordered, and ~$75. Stephen ------------------------------ From: Stephen Bezruchka Subject: More Marantz PMD 600 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 11:09:23 -0800 (PST) I was wrong about the USB, it is 1.1. Max file size (per recording) is 4.3 gB, and it will take the largest CF card out there right now, (8gB). Stephen ------------------------------ From: Ed Buckel Subject: mercury rev taping Reply-To: Ed Buckel Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 14:51:48 -0500 I'm hoping to tape mercury rev at their upcoming detroit show. on the furthernet bandlist i found this info... http://www.mercuryrev.net/content/Welcome.html - A message for anyone interested in making an audio recording of a live Mercury Rev show: please feel free to do so, what's ours is yours. You may want to check with the venue beforehand to be sure that they will allow it. We'll do our best to set aside an area somewhere near the mixing console for you to set up. Unfortunately, we cannot provide a direct feed to the console. Eventually, we would like to post some of these live shows on our site, so if you've got some recordings that you'd like to share via our website, contact us. however, that info is from 2 years ago and is no longer on their website. I was wondering if this is still true, especially since they're touring with the doves. Does anyone have any updated info about this or maybe a contact that i could email to find out some more info. thanks ed ------------------------------ From: Ryan Gear Subject: Sony 957 Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 21:58:22 -0500 > > >Hi, I've heard some great bootlegs made with the ECM-MS957 and am >thinking of buying one. > >Does anyone here use it for bootlegging concerts? How do you find it? >Is it easy to mount? My only concern is that it looks a bit to big to >stealth tape with.... >Any personal reviews of this microphone would be greatly appreciated. >Either through personal email on on DATheads. > > I have Sony 957 I've had for about 3 years now, which nowadays I just use it for stealth purposes since I got my Schoeps Aug. '02. Used it with MD until I picked up a D7 summer '03. I like it for stealth because I can fit it in my pants and it fits right on my shoulder under my shirt, and unless someones looking right at me you cant really see its there. Works with any standard mic stand too, and the only setup is just to point it in the source of the music. r. ------------------------------ From: "Ben Leach" Subject: ALPINE 5700 car dat Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 21:08:31 -0600 I have one of these cool Alpine car dat players for sale. I got it off ebay and to the best of my knowledge it has never even been installed. Contact me off the list if you are interested. Need to dig around a bit and see how much I paid for it. thxs. ben@pcspeed.com ------------------------------ From: Joe Thierry Subject: used DAT/DDS tapes for sale Date: Tue, 15 Mar 2005 23:16:46 -0500 I have about 40 used DAT and DDS tapes for sale. I figure these are worth around $1.50 each. I have a combination of Maxell 60M DDS tapes and Sony Audio DAT 125min. I would like to sell all of these to one person but will split into groups of 10. Most of these are Max Creek recordings from 2002 and 2003. Just to be clear though I'm selling used tapes not music! I'll pay shipping and cover any Paypal fees. Thanks, Joe ------------------------------ From: "Bob S."
