("john e. bogus") ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Sherm Clow" Subject: Edirol R1 vs Marantz 660 Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 10:32:20 -0700 The R1 seems like a plasticy piece of crap... does not inspire any confidence of quality. I've heard it works great, but compare it to a D100 and you are left wanting... The R1 does not inspire me at all. Haven't seen the Marantz, looks great, but larger, which is an issue for stealthing. Also, with balanced inputs, which is technically great, but not useful for most stealth mikes which are 1/8" input. So we continue to search for the holy grail of DAT replacement... Think I'll just have my D100 service and continue to use DAT... ------------------------------ From: digit@redwing.net Subject: Analog Hiss Reduction Ideas? Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 11:59:22 -0600 (CST) I am curious to learn if anybody has had good results with any SW designed to reduce analog tape hiss? I intend to do some cassette transfering to CD for archival purposes and am wondering how best to deal with inherent tape hiss. I have tried various plug-ins for Soundforge 6.0 but haven't gotten the desired results. Has somebody come up with a program (or method) that when given a small segment of "hiss only" (tape lead in, between songs, etc.) can accurately remove such hiss without damaging those same frequencies in the music? Perhaps this is too much to ask for! Thanks in advance! Dave ------------------------------ From: Phipps Subject: R300 A/D question Reply-To: Phipps Date: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 10:01:16 -0800 (GMT-08:00) The SBM function on the R300 will only be utilized if the SBM switch is selected and illuminated on the R300 disply. My taping buddy, dwonk, turned me onto this trick & I use it for all my analog transfers since I feel it provides a better A/D conversion than just feeding my analog deck into my AP2496 via RCA's. The SBM program Sony uses is a very nice A/D process and often, to my ears, produces a very clean, crisp transfer that sounds really pretty amazing. I also use a Nak deck as well and my A/D path is as follows: Nakamichi DR-3 > RCA I/O's > Sony R300 (SBM-on in rec. mode only w/out tape) > SPDIF I/O's > AP2496 > HD Sweet trick. Sure it would work with the R500 as well!! Nak-on! I found that, with the R300 empty, I could hit the "record" button, bring up a display reading "source," and feed the Nakamichi directly into the hard drive. I've obviously made an A/D conversion. Has the "SBM" function of the R300 also been utilized?
