I have found the holy grail, the problem is you must pay for it.
http://www.zaxcom.com/audio/deva4.shtml
http://www.zaxcom.com/audio/deva5.shtml
I have the Deva IV (if you want to hear it, go to bt.etree.org and grab the Bruce Hornsby show from Austin) and it is in my mind without a doubt the best type of portable device like this, but it also isn't cheap.
The other solutions that keep coming up as DAT replacements are also very nice (SD 722 and SD 744T). The bottom line is they are like DATs were when they first arrived on the scene; they are pricey at the moment.
Some of the other solutions (PDAs, JB3) can be used as replacements with costs that can be the same or less than DAT, so there are some things that might be considered possible replacements. But you mentioned the holy grail...

One of my favorite bands is touring the West Coast and
Europe for the next couple of months. They will not
(to my knowledge) be coming to the East Coast so I
will have no way of the taping them.
The band is The Bellrays. They allow taping (audio and
video). When I taped them I simply double-checked with
the lead singer (Lisa) who gave me permission. Most of
the venues they play are smaller and don't usually
have a problem with taping. I would imagine if there
is a problem you can just have the venue ask the band
for permission and they should give it.
Here are the March and April tour dates on the west
coast:
Thurs March 24 - Glendale, CA The Scene
Fri March 25 - San Rafael, CA - Pint Size Lounge
Sat March 26 - Sacramento, CA - Old Ironsides
Sun March 27 - San Francisco, CA - Slims
Tues March 29 - Portland, OR - Doug Fir Lounge
Weds March 30 - Olympia, WA - The Clipper
Thurs March 31 - Seattle, WA - Crocodile Café
Fri Apr 1 - Boise, ID - Neurolux
Sat Apr 2 - Salt Lake City, UT (venue TBA)
Sun Apr 3 - Ft. Collins, CO - The Starlight
Mon Apr 4 - Denver, CO - Larimer Lounge
Wed Apr 6 - Tucson, AZ - Plush
Thur Apr 7 - Phoenix, AZ (venue TBA)
Fri Apr 8 - San Diego, CA - Casbah
Sat Apr 9 - Long Beach, CA - Alex's
Sun Apr 10 - Los Angeles, CA - Spaceland
European tour starts Tuesday, April 12 in Caen, FR and
visits the following countries: France, Greece,
Switzerland, the UK (Scotland, England), Belgium,
Holland, Germany, Sweden, and Finland. The tour page
with exact dates and locations in Europe is at
http://www.thebellrays.com/tour_dates.html
The best I can describe the band is that it is like if
Tina Turner fronted the Ramones. Their tag line is
"Maximum Rock N'Soul" and it's true.
Anyway, if anyone could tape any of the shows listed I
would be forever grateful. I will send you Paypal for
the cost of the DAT tape/MD, as well as half the price
of the admission ticket upfront. If you do NOT enjoy
the show, I will send you Paypal after you send me the
tape for the other half of the admission price, as
well as the cost of a beer. I would imagine the cost
of most of these shows is pretty low - I've never paid
more than $12. If there is travel or parking involved
we can discuss reimbursement for reasonable expenses,
like gas or batteries (if you don't use
rechargeables).
Oh, last thing, that new Nissan commercial where
someone very soulful is singing "Revolution, get down"
-- that's them.
Thanks, and sorry for the long post. If you know of
any other place I should post this plea for tapers to
help me out, please let me know.

I don't think I would call it the holy grail, but other than a few minor complaints I love my JB3 and you can find them for $100-130. Analog/digital in, 3 hour max file length when recording wav at 48k, 6 hours recording off 2 rechargable battieries. Firewire transfer to the PC.
I have a stealh setup and a full rig... works fine with both. Stealthed cake/everclear last night. DSM6P -> PA-3SX -> JB3. Came home... started the transfer... started to get ready for bed... both shows were transferred by the time I was done brushing my teath.
I'ts also very easy to swap out the standard HD for a larger one. I've got 80 gigs in mine. Enough space for an entire festival. :-}
Stay Kind,
Dana

The H2210/15 pocket pc with SD memory records well at 24/96 (as does the 3835). 2gb Sandisk media should be available within a month.
FLAC encoding while recording will be added to Live2496. Batch conversion is working in alpha now. The stream encoder will be added shortly.
A few 24-bit 96kHz recordings are now available on bt.etree.org fielded with PDAudio and Live2496. Thanks to Craig Taraszki.

But it does have an 1/8" LINE input, which would be perfect for
CSB mics under most circumstances.
