I have thought about moving to a solution like this, but I have been busted before and probably will again; at least now I can usually just give the security my tape and get out of there. I know they don't really have a legal right to confiscate equipment since that issue has been discussed on DAT-heads in the past, but everyone also knows that venue security isn't always as enlightened on legal aspects of taping; how are you going to talk a security goon into letting you leave with your equipment if it already has a show on the hard equipment? Rob Why don't you come up and surf me sometime? --> http://www.patriot.net/users/rob > From: > Subject: Re: Edirol R1 vs Marantz 660 > Date: Fri, 18 Mar 2005 12:49:32 -0500 > > > So we continue to search for the holy grail of DAT replacement... > > I don't think I would call it the holy grail, but other than a few > minor complaints I love my JB3 and you can find them for $100-130. > Analog/digital in, 3 hour max file length when recording wav at 48k, 6 > hours recording off 2 rechargable battieries. O Donnell" Subject: Semi-brickwalling Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 20:03:26 GMT I had previously asked for advice about a situation that I was encountering in which I was getting a recording which brickwalled at the high end but was otherwise clear--in other words, 90% of the recording sounded clear while 10% at the top was crap. Several digesters kindly offered advice, but short of buying a bass rolloff, nothing that was suggested worked. So the question I wanted to ask advice on is this: in those situations where I suspect there is going to be potential brickwall overage of sound, is it possible/feasible/advisable to use the Auto AGC or Mic Limiter? How much will this affect the end result. Will the results be listenable? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Mark J. Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 15:07:50 EST Have you tried Sonic Foundry's Noise Reduction plug in for Sound Forge? It's from the same company (now Sony) that makes Sound Forge. I have gotten excellent results using it. If you have a lot of noise to reduce, best results are achieved by doing two or more passes of mild to moderate (say 10dB) NR, rather than one pass of heavy (say 20 - 30 dB) NR. Of course, too much noise reduction can result in flanging and other undesirable artifacts. The great thing about the Sonic Foundry Noise Reduction plug in for Sound Forge is that it gives you a ton of parameters to experiment with. Rob > I am curious to learn if anybody has had good results with any SW designed to reduce analog tape hiss? > I intend to do some cassette transfering to CD for archival purposes and am wondering how best to deal with inherent tape hiss. I have tried various plug-ins for Soundforge 6.0 but haven't gotten the desired results. ------------------------------ From: dave n Subject: re: Holy Grail ... DAT replacement Reply-To: dave n Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 15:30:48 -0500 (GMT-05:00) There are several holy grails out there for a price... My absolute favorite is: http://www.aaton.com/products/sound/cantar/index.php Only about $15,000.00 ;-) dave n nyc >From: "Sherm Clow" > RE: > So we continue to search for the holy grail of DAT replacement... > Think I'll just have my D100 service and continue to use DAT... I have found the holy grail, the problem is you must pay for it. http://www.zaxcom.com/audio/deva4.shtml http://www.zaxcom.com/audio/deva5.shtml I have the Deva IV (if you want to hear it, go to bt.etree.org and grab the Bruce Hornsby show from Austin) and it is in my mind without a doubt the best type of portable device like this, but it also isn't cheap. The other solutions that keep coming up as DAT replacements are also very nice (SD 722 and SD 744T). The bottom line is they are like DATs were when they first arrived on the scene; they are pricey at the moment. Some of the other solutions (PDAs, JB3) can be used as replacements with costs that can be the same or less than DAT, so there are some things that might be considered possible replacements. But you mentioned the holy grail... ------------------------------ From: "Martin Klingmeyer" Subject: Tape Hiss Date: Sat, 19 Mar 2005 20:48:47 -0500 Personally I have not had any good results with software based Noise Reduction Programs. I have been involved with the archival and restoration of historical classical recordings, and have been disappointed with the results software delivers. We have found that the artifacts are more bothersome than the hiss itself. If you have the means, get yourself a Cedar system. Sonic Circus has a used unit for about $7,000 -M > > I am curious to learn if anybody has had good results with any SW designed > to reduce analog tape hiss? > ------------------------------ From: "john e. bogus" Subject: I second the recommendation Date: Sun, 20 Mar 2005 08:49:10 -0500 Beth's recommendation to tape the Bellrays is a really good one, that I won't hesitate in seconding! Saw them last year opening for Nebula, and the vocalist is incredible.....I don't know if I necessarily agree with the description of "like if Tina Turner fronted the Ramones", but they're an old-school rock and roll band with an extremely soulful and melodic vocalist......I'm still kicking myself for not taping them.....
