I have an old Pentium 3 450 system that I built years ago with SCSI drives. It is finally time for a replacement! With the SCSI drives I can load a three hour show and when editing in Soundforge can scroll through the three hour show with no stuttered movement (i.e., the scroll is continuous and the software does not need to wait for the drive to catch up). Can someone with a Serial ATA system give me feedback on their system and if they can scroll without waiting for the drive? Or should I go with SCSI again?
It would help if you describe your brand of drives, the speed of the drive (e.g., 7200 rpm) and interface card.
Thanks
Chuck Quinn

Hello,
I own a Tascam DA-20 (not MKII!) and I'm wondering if it has the ability
to show the error-correction (errors etc...) with some "secret
commands". I know that e.g. the DA-P1 can do this..
Is there a possibilty?
Thanks, Martin

Excellent suggestions (and I'm sure we all have a ready supply of dud DAT
tapes or MDs that we can use to stick those dummy stickers to), as long as
you mean hand over the disc or other media, not the recorder itself. :-)
Never surrender your gear, even an outmoded MD recorder!
Thing is, with a HD recorder, and no decoy, one might have no choice but to
erase a just-recorded gem of a show from the drive while they watch--how
painful.
I concur that most goons have no idea that a JB3 isn't a garden-variety CD
walkman (although the form factor is just a tad too small), especially if
one walks into the venue with it in a fanny pack, with headphones jacked
into it and in one's ears or around one's neck.
And surely it isn't coincidence that the only place it says "REC" on a JB3
is on the removable face plate?
Anyway, within a few years I'm sure we'll all have cellphone-based,
Bluetooth-enabled recording devices with decent full frequency range mic
capsules built in and 4 GB flash memory capacity, and the infrastructure of
popular music distribution will truly have changed irrevocably.

Do the security guys actually know where the tape loading bay is, or _isn't_,
on a JB3? Carry a sacrificial tape & social engineer your way out of it... ;)
(You could hand 'em a micro-cassette & they'd likely not know it from a DAT...)
Having a set of dead batteries on you to do the same sort of okey-doke
manuver with can also be useful... I'd bet they don't know which is the power
button, either...

Just wondering since you mentioned using this setup in a stealth situation
- what happens if you get busted taping a show? I have thought about
moving to a solution like this, but I have been busted before and
probably will again; at least now I can usually just give the security my
tape and get out of there. I know they don't really have a legal right
to confiscate equipment since that issue has been discussed on DAT-heads
in the past, but everyone also knows that venue security isn't always
as enlightened on legal aspects of taping; how are you going to talk a
security goon into letting you leave with your equipment if it already
has a show on the hard equipment?

I have a pair for each night which I will not be able to use. Tickets are GA Floor. I have $175 in it and would like to get that back. If you've got something else in mind, let me know. I'm flexible.
Thanks,
William

Does anyone know about Mars Volta's taping policies?
Anyone know how to contact them in advance to discuss a
possible soundboard tape, etc?
thanks
