From: "fun soul" <funsoul@hotmail.com> Subject: dat & pcm > pc? Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2005 14:58:49 +0000 Hi Folks What hardware do I need to do digital transfers from DAT and PCM to pc? The DAT machine is a Sony DTC-59es and the PCM is a Sony PCM-601esd. I know that the sampling rates are slightly different between the 2 formats so would appreciate info on how to deal with that issue as well. I also use the pc for video stuff and gaming so whichever soundcard should be ok for those uses. The cards that I've seen so far that appear up to the task are: - SEK'D Prodif 88- out of the question with a price tag of $659. - M-Audio Audiophile 2496- about $150 but needs a seperate component (or maybe just a miniplug adaptor?) to allow use of my pc's speakers. - Creative Audigy2 Platinum- under $200...I recall reading that anything that comes in via the digital inputs on the Live! cards is re-sampled by the card...not sure if that applies to the Audigy2? Also, historically, the Creative cards have been major bus hogs. - E-mu 0404- about $100..don't really know anything about this card but it does seem to have the correct digital inputs that I'm looking for(?). E-mu also has the 1212m ($200). Read about various driver-related problems wiht the E-mu's...not sure what kind of effect they'd have on my setup, though. Any thoughts or recommendations on these or any other cards? Any help would be appreciated. tia! -funsoul
From: Clare Andrews <clare.andrews@new.oxford.ac.uk> Subject: Advice on Marantz PMD 660 for non-techy Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2005 16:50:08 +0100 I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to advise a non-techy? I’m just a biology PhD student who records the calls of birds in their nests for my research and I no virtualy nothing about sound tech. I used to have a PMD680 for this, but that is no longer, and I’m looking to buy either the PMD 670 or 660 as replacement - obviously with a preference for the more portable option if it wil do the job - but I've read some reviews that suggest possible problems of a noisey pre-amp.. I record mono at 16bit 48kHz to .wav, but am limited to small mic (I use Sony ECM-T6 Clip-On - specs at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000095SBV/ref=e_de_a_td/104-7219270-7181520?v=glance&s=electronics&vi=tech-data) I wonder if anyone here would be so kind as to give me their opinion as to how this would be with the 660, as sadly I don’t know the difference between condenser, dynamic, lo and hi output mics, tho I’m guessing something this small and cheap isn’t going to be much good in the 660? I suspect it would be ok with the 670 as the s/n seemed fine with my old 680. THANKS!
From: "American-Digital" <dan@am-dig.com> Subject: ISO Tom Petty AUD recordings Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2005 13:52:11 -0400 I am looking for audience (AUD) recordings of the following well circulated SBD/FM Tom Petty shows. 2-7-97 Fillmore West, SF 4-19-99 Irving Plaza, NY 4-23-99 The Docks, Hamburg 4-19-03 The Vic, IL Please help me if you can. I have allot I can trade. Looking to make a DVD-A 5.1 utilizing the SBD in the front channels and the AUD in the rear. Tom Petty has long been one of my favorite artist's and the ability to construct a surround sound show has eluded me thus far. Thanks you in advance for your help. See below for bandwidth tax. Dan BWT- I'll take 2 folks. You must have a DVD-A with surround sound setup. Pink Floyd Empire Pool Wembly, London, UK November 16, 1974 DVD-Audio (6ch x 16/44) 5.1 Mix 01 [02:08] Speak To Me 02 [03:02] Breathe 03 [05:04] On the Run 04 [06:35] Time 05 [06:48] The Great Gig In The Sky 06 [08:14] Money 07 [07:46] Us And Them 08 [07:42] Any Colour You Like 09 [03:39] Brain Damage 10 [02:05] Eclipse Encore 11 [23:28] Echoes TT [76:31] ========================================================= Source Info SBD Pre FM Master Reel (SBD) > DAT > ? > SHN Recorded by BBC Radio One broadcasted on the Alan Freeman Show on 11th January 1975. This is taken from the original pre-broadcast master tapes. AUD Unknown AUD Recording > ? > DAT > SHN This is likely off cassette masters. ========================================================= Tech Notes SHNs were decoded to wave and SF 6.0 was used to reassemble the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align & synch both of the sources. CEP2.0 used to adjust the volume for the AUD, center and LFE channels. DiscWelder was used to author and create the DVD-Audio in 5.1. DVD Decryptor read and created the ISO image file. This incorporates 6 channels of 16/44 wave files. - Mixed by dan@am-dig.com - FLAC conversion 01-APR-2005 - Artwork by dan@am-dig.com 300dpi - For best results print at the highest resolution onto glossy photo paper. Design for use with a clear slim single jewel case. - Special thanks to unknown artist that helped with lots of the images used in this artwork. ========================================================= DVD-A Info Front Left Channel Pre FM (SBD) Reel Right Channel Pre FM (SBD) Reel Center Mixed to mono -6db SBD+AUD Matrix Surround Left Channel -2db Unknown AUD Right Channel -2db Unknown AUD Sub/LFE Mixed to mono -4db Pre FM (SBD) Reel ========================================================= Notes The quieter portions AUD recording were quite a bit louder than The Pre FM (SBD). I reduced the AUD by -2db in the rear channels. In my experience louder rear channels is an undesirable effect. d1t01 The line "I've been mad for fucking years" in Speak To Me was removed from the Pre FM (SBD) source. This was not cut out as the length of the song was still the same as the AUD. I tried a number of edits to mix that line from the AUD into the SBD source. I could not come up with an edit I considered smooth. I was able to perform the same edit of this line on the AUD source with a smooth and natural result. So this line has been removed from both the SBD and the AUD source. This is smooth and most likely undetectable. d1t05 The Pre FM (SBD) source was missing 3.875 seconds between The Great Gig In The Sky and Money. The AUD was the trimmed accordingly to match. Being at the repetitive portion on the end of the song, this is smooth and most likely undetectable. d1t08 The AUD source cuts at 41:07.515 and is missing 1:36.33 of Any Colour You Like. I used the Pre FM (SBD) source mixed with a repeating crowd cheer portion from the AUD recording to add depth. I then applied a 1:46.333 patch with 5 second crossfades on each end. The result is good but as this is a source change it is still somewhat noticeable. d1t09 You can get a good feel for the effect of sound travel during the line "The lunatic is on the grass.". The sound travel results in a small echo on the AUD source and can be heard in the rear channels on the 5.1 and the matrix mix. This is very interesting. d1t10 The Pre FM (SBD) has a long portion of cheering and tuning prior to the encore Echoes. Unfortunately this was missing from the AUD source. The SBD was trimmed to match and both sources has multiple edits, mixing and crossfades were performed to keep the flow btwn the last song and the encore sounding as natural as possible. The result was good and this is smooth and most likely undetectable. ========================================================= More On DVD-Audio 5.1 Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel sound, like DTS, Dolby Digital, SACD and DVD-A. You will need a DVD-A compatible DVD player to listen to this 5.1 mix. Burning Instructions Use DVD Decryptor or similar program to burn as an image file (ISO) onto a DVDR. Enjoy.

From: Peter <drchen_2@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: dat taping question Reply-To: drchen_2@yahoo.com Date: Tue, 19 Apr 2005 13:43:50 -0700 (PDT) I stealth-taped by brother's wedding, a catholic ceremony, and it was funny when I went up to receive Holy Communion. As he did with all communion recipients, the priest said something like " body of Christ"; he was waiting for a standard response ( I forget what that was at this moment) but I didn't want to talk over my tape. He held back the communion wafer from me until I responded. The slight delay felt like forever. Awkward moment. He could clearly see the relatively large Sonic DSM mics hanging from my glasses and the D8 and wires in my hand... :-)) fun taping stories.... From: "Gary Davis" <g@hoxnet.com> Subject: Maxell Japan DVD-R's under 40 cents through Saturday Reply-to: g@hoxnet.com Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 03:58:07 -0700 Made in Japan, Maxell 8X DVD-R (also DVD+R) discs under 40 cents at Staples and Office Depot, both in 50-packs under $20, Staples is $1 cheaper. No rebate, no limit. With my Pioneer Hard disk/DVD recorder, I can burn a full disk in under 10 minutes! Be sure to look for "Made in Japan" above the barcode. The importance of not using "junk" discs was brought to my attention recently, when several off-brand discs a friend gave me 18 months ago all failed to play. Moral: even if you're giving away or trading the discs, please don't use the junk brands if you can avoid it. Even when I tried to find some non-Japan discs cheaper than these Maxells, I couldn't! --Gary
