That's why a lot of older albums were "digitally re-mastered"= =20 > when they were first released on CD.=20 This process was called sub-mastering. And there is a lot more to it than t= his... this is what I did for a local duplication house for a few years. Pa= rt of the reason we did submastering was not because of limitations (althou= gh there were plenty of those), but because of the formats required. For ex= ample, cassette duplication required 1/4" tape which would be cut and splic= ed into a large endless loop. This ran continually in a bin and after each = loop a tone was placed on the cassette tape pancake. This allowed the casse= tte loading equipment to know where to stop feeding the tape in, cut, then = splice the leader. Because both processes ran at very high speeds you neede= d more than one submaster. One of the equipment reps told us at the time th= at Michael Jackson's Thriller recording had almost 50 submasters. Yes, we c= ompensated slightly for some of the eq loss of the cassette format, but mos= t of the eq changes were pre-programmed into the duplicators. They had sett= ings that when we calibrated them, we would tweak based on the type of tape= used (at the time we used mainly Agfa and Capitol). Anyhow, my guess is su= bmasters were never used to make CDs because they really weren't in the rig= ht format and trying to use them as masters after several days of use would= have been a huge mistake.=20 Wayne ------------------------------ From: Luddite00@aol.com Subject: The Mars Volta - Chicago Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 10:44:18 EDT Hey All, Anyone planning to tape the 2nd night in Chicago of The Mars Volta? If all goes well, I will be getting the first night (15th). Good weekend, ~Brian ------------------------------ From: Paul & Jen Beichert Subject: Help with mixing and mastering Date: Fri, 06 May 2005 20:05:25 -0400 Looking for some help here with mixing a SBD and AUD recording. I have a nearly mono sounding board feed > DAT plus a separate recording of the show spread omnis about 15 feet back from the stage > DAT. I'd like to combine these two recordings as an experiment for the band. I've got G3 and G4 Macs, both running OSX. Would like to know what software the Mac folks are using for editing. I've fooled around with a trial version of Bias Peak and I like the software though going through the manual, I'm not sure if it is possible to mix the two sources. Short of making a CD from my DAT via my Tascam CD-RW 700 and then extracting the audio (which I assume is NOT ideal) what hardware might I need to get my DATs to the hard drive?? Some type of external soundcard?. What are the other 3 Mac users out there doing?!. I have firewire and USB ports available. Could this hardware also be used to record directly to my laptop? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Paul pnjbeichert@frontiernet.net ------------------------------ From: "George Rue" Subject: ISO: Metallica Boston 10/25/04 Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 20:02:35 -0400 This was one of the few shows that was NOT recorded for Instant Live release.
