Hyper is the most directional, and will eliminate "off axis" sound the
most- the price you pay for this is that sometimes the sound of a
directional mic is somewhat nasal, but that applies more to shotguns
than hypers.
the least directional is the omni (omnidirectional = all directions),
next is the sub-card (halfway between omni and cardioid). Cardioid
refers to a HEART-SHAPE pattern- which de-emphasizes sounds coming
from the rear.
Hyper is like cardioid except the pattern is even narrower in the
front, but the rejection in the back is actually greatest at an angle
to the mic, not straight on. This is perfect if you will be standing
behind the mic blocking sound from behind, and you only want the front
lobe to grab the music. techincally, a Hypercardioid pattern is
half-way between cardioid and figure-of-eight. (figure of eight picks
up equally in front and behind but blocks audio from the side)
hope this helps- google HYPERCARDIOID and click on googles images to
see a drawing of the pattern.

They are fine with taping. I'll be getting them at the Joshua Tree Fest
next weekend if I have batteries left. They are the last band of the last
day. Luckily if I don't there will be some outfit selling SBD CDs directly
after each show. Wish they did that last year... No one taped and Hamsa
Lila had an amazing 1am til dawn set. Hope they do it again this year
Saturday night.
Stay Kind,
Dana

Anyone hit Xcel Energy Center in St Paul recently? What might one expect in
the way of door security these days?
Thanks.
Fred

I need to buy a used AT853 Hyper mic. Does anybody have a pair that they
are willing to part with for about half price? I'm seeing them list for
about $230. It's just a bit more than i can afford. I'm using a Sony 907
right now. Thanks
George
