From: "Oleg Kuzmichov" <antares34@mail.ru> Subject: HDD recorder Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 21:34:51 +0400 Hi there, I need some help. I want to switch to HDD recorder now, but don't know which one is the most comfortable for taping. Some of my friends suggested iRiver H-320 / iHP-140 or Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 (model of 2002 as I learned, not so easy to find now) Maybe somebody on this list has had a taping experience with the HDD recorders? Is it worth it? Any help will be aprecciated, please e-mail me privately if you can give useful advice. Thanks.
From: "Leif R. Montin" <leif.montin@sympatico.ca> Subject: RE: data tapes Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 14:40:46 -0400 Hey Tom, I'm new to taping, so I can't say much from personal experience, but I have researched the question, and found this: http://www.ttapes.com/techtips/datdds.html To quote the article: "Basically, DAT (Digital Audio Tape) tapes are "standard" for digital recording media. DAT does not have to meet minimum drop-out rates, nor does it have to be manufactured in a clean room. DAT does not have to meet many of the stringent standards that DDS does. On the other hand, DDS (Digital Data Storage) is manufactured in a clean room (dust and particle free) and must meet very stringent ANSI standards for Bit Error Rate (BER) and critical computer data storage." The author favours DDT tape over DAT tape. No mention of whether DDS tapes are "rougher" on the heads, but I don't see how they could be. I use DDS tapes in my DAT recorder. Cheaper, better. Why not. cheers! LRM > Are data tapes rougher than audio dats on your > heads? i know the differences between 60m and 90m > tapes, I am not referring to that. But it seems that > all the manufacturers recommend only audio tapes, not > to use data tapes. And of course maxell says never to > use data tapes in my dat deck. But I know I have heard > the data tapes are actually better, lower errors. But > then I have heard that the audio tapes are a different > formulation which is not as rough on the heads. > Just wanted to know what everyone's conclusion is on > this one, after all these years.

Have many nice shows to trade so if you are sitting on one, let me know. They also performed under the name Pink Wolves on some occasions so maybe someone taped them??? From: "Slipkid" <slipkid@voicenet.com> Subject: porcupine tree on tour Reply-To: "Slipkid" <slipkid@voicenet.com> Date: Mon, 23 May 2005 22:41:46 -0400 i'm in the midst of raging PORCUPINE TREE fever after seeing/taping 2 shows in 2 weeks and am looking to hookup with any other obsessed ptree fans who've taped any recent (or upcoming) shows who want to do some trading they will be on tour in the USA for their new DEADWING album for the next 3 weeks or so; tourdates are here http://www.porcupinetree.com/tour.cfm for those that are not familiar with them but possibly curious, hard to explain what they sound like other than throw together great songwriting, playing, singing, add a touch of very unique proggy keyboard textures in spots, heavy gtr, awesome rhythym section, and hit the rush/pink floyd/king crimson/yes/iron maiden/metallica settings on your blender and that is kind of close to what they're like some insightful reviews of their albums are here: http://www.ssmt-reviews.com/db/searchrev.php?artistID=907&showReview=true http://www.studiomlive.com/reviews/deadwing0305_jc.html http://www.rockeyez.com/reviews/cd/porcupine_tree/rev-deadwing.html http://www.kludgemagazine.com/reviews/Porcupine_Tree/Deadwing p.s. the band is "trader" friendly but not "taper" friendly - if you want to tape you need to stealth and be sure to not stand too close to the stage, if yer spotted you will be dimed out to security! - jon - slipkid@voicenet.com
