However, there are some practical differences. All tapes have a coating of lubricant, which can wear off after repeated passes. I am under the impression that Audio-grade tapes have a coating which is made to withstand more passes before it deteriorates. This makes sense, if you consider that a studio DAT could be used for several hundred passes, while a data backup tape would only be expected to be used once for the write operation and then MAYBE not played back more than once. (unless they were rotated regularly. . .Hmmm!?!) The other thing that made me switch is the running time of the DDS ones. I can run the (thinner) 3-hour tapes in portable and home decks without problems, and often it's nice to get more than 2 hours on a tape. By the time I decided to use 90-meter (three hours of audio) DDS, I figured "why not use the dds 60's as well" since they work fine, and I tend to use them more as computer data backup than for repeated play. I just finished my first draft of the new Edirol R4 hdd recorder review. Come and get it! www.nickspicks.com www.nickspicks.com - ONLINE REVIEWS - recording equipment / Hi-Fi stereo equipment - FAQs and HOW TO pages ------------------------------ From: Subject: RE: HDD recorder Date: Tue, 24 May 2005 13:54:16 -0500 Oleg, If you are looking for something compact that has S/PDIF digital input and can record to hard disk or flash memory look into the PDAudio system at www.core-sound.com You can get started with as little as an H2215 pocket pc, the core sound PDAudio device, and some SD memory. Note that this is the recorder function only, no mics or preamp) If you want to use 5gb toshiba discs, you can use an H5500 (or even an older 3800) and a dual PC card expansion pack. A few pocket pc's can record to USB drives over USB 1.1 if you are interested in that.
