Anyone tape Sloan on Saturday night? I filmed right next to the stage and
that's great but the audio's pretty distorted (overpowered the mic). If you
have good audio I can sync them. Please contact me if you taped the show.
Thanks,
Wes

Hey Gang-
Just picked up a great FOB of the standout Giants Stadium show 6-17-91.
Complete with in-your-face crowd reaction, yelping fans and a screaming
chick. Great dynamic range, good bass response and all instrumrents
well balance to-boot. Love it.
Anyway, the source info is very sketchy. This is exactly how my CDs
came listed:
Aud > fob > mdat > dat > cd > shn (b&k 4011's)
Would anyone out there have additional info on this recording? Taper,
location, preamp-etc, transfer? I'd like my text file to be more
complete while simultaneously not really caring as it sounds great and
that's what matters. (btw- I am still listening for completeness and/or
any flaws).
Thanks in advance for any help on this.
BWT- I'll take 2 at random...just send me your address.

Tech Notes
SHNs/FLACs were decoded to wave. SF 6.0 was used to reassemble
the tracks back to 1 long wave. CEP2.0 was used to align &
synch the SBD & the AUD sources. CEP2.0 used to adjust the
volume for both the AUD, SBD, Matrix and LFE channels. Surcode
CD Pro DTS was used to encode to DTS.

Notes
I did some pretty drastic EQing on both sources prior to the
multitrack mixdown. The thought process was to try and keep
all the things that were good about both sources without
sacrificing those qualities during the mixdown. This mix was
used for the front and Sub/LFE channels. B/c of the poor
resolution on the Webcast I did not want that source alone
in the 2 front, main speakers.
The FOB is very good, well balanced, good bass and high end,
great dynamic range and not too much close crowd noise. Like
many AUDs the vocals are are a little low. Other than that a
tremendous pull under insane conditions; packed in a tiny venue
with general admission. This is not an effort to make the AUD
better or by any means replace the AUD. It's just give another
version for us DMB fans.
The webcast, besides very low resolution, has mushy, undefined
bass, brittle highs, poor frequency response and although
distorted is not the right word it just was not clear. This
is most noticeable on a good stereo on higher sound volume.
The vocals, however we clear and worked to improve that portion
of the AUD.
The webcast also suffered from some random dropouts scattered
throughout the recording plus a 2+ minute digital freakout in
Two Step. Below is the list of edits performed to bring the
recording to this point. Not included were a few between song
edits that did not disturb the music or anything. Those edits
are also 100% seemless.
The first thing I did was run a 4+ hour click-n-pop eliminator.
I ran this at a very light setting using the highest quality
setting. Although if you listen very carefully you will still
hear a few pops during some very quite portions, I was able to
remove several thousand with out disturbing the music.
I reduced the AUD by -2db in the rear channels. In my
experience louder rear channels is an undesirable effect.
d1t03 "Too Much" 17:21.039 - 17:21.671 (0.632) bleeped swear
patched with the AUD source. I raised the levels +6db and EQed
to make transition as smooth as possible. This is somewhat
noticeable but very good.
d1t03 Crowd after "Too Much" 22:34.037 - 22:34.676 (0.639)
bleeped swear patched with the AUD source. I raised the levels
+8db and EQed to make transition as smooth as possible. This
is smooth and most likely undetectable.
d1t07 "American Baby" 38:24.807 - 38:25.401 (0.594) dropout
patched with the AUD source. I raised the levels +5db and EQed
to make transition as smooth as possible. This switch in
sources is obvious to the listener but better than the dropout.
d1t07 Crowd cheer after "American Baby" 40:27.345 - 40:27.666
(0.321) bleeped swear patched with the AUD source. I raised the
levels +10db and EQed to make transition as smooth as possible.
This switch in sources is obvious to the listener but better
than the dropout/bleep.
d2t02 "The Stone" 13:03.260 - 13:04.443 (1.183) dropout or
likely a transmission pause/glitch was removed resulting in a
very small loss of music. The AUD was trimmed accordingly to
match. This is smooth and most likely undetectable.
d2t05 "Two Step" 37:05.501 - 37:07.381 (1.880) dropout or
likely a transmission pause/glitch was removed resulting in a
very small loss of music. The AUD was trimmed accordingly to
match. This is smooth and most likely undetectable.
d2t05 "Two Step" 37:47.710 - 37:48.672 (0.962) dropout patched
with the AUD source. I raised the levels +4db and EQed to make
transition as smooth as possible. This switch in sources is
obvious to the listener but better than the dropout.
d2t05 "Two Step" 39:38.089 - 41:58.458 (2:20.506) major digital
errors were patched with the AUD source. I raised the levels
+4db and EQed to make transition as smooth as possible. This
switch in sources is obvious to the listener but hardly
noticeable as it switches back to the matrix. This is much
better than the massive zap to your stereo and head.
d2t06 Crowd cheer after "Ants Marching" and the encore was
trimmed on both the SBD and the AUD. I matched and crossfaded
both to keep things flowing and natural. This is smooth and
most likely undetectable.
I highly suggest this 2 disc option as I belive this helps
keep this concert flowing and better represents the show.
However, for those unfamiliar or unable to burn 90 minute
diss I suggest you do the 3rd disc break between "Ants
Marching" and "Everyday".
If you play this DTS-Audio-CD and hear static it is b/c you
didn't really read the text file, did you?

More On DTS
Today's audio standards are moving towards multi-channel
sound, like DTS and Dolby Digital. While the Audio-CD
standard (Red Book) hasn't changed to accommodate these
new sound formats, it is still possible to go around the
specification and to put a 5.1 surround recording on a
regular Audio-CD. To play a DTS-Audio-CD you must connect
your DVD/CD player via a digital cable (optical or coaxial)
to your DTS Dolby-Digital receiver. It is not 100% sure
that your receiver will recognize a DTS-Audio CD, so the
first time you're trying to playback a DTS-Audio-CD you
must do a test to determine if it can. Begin with the
volume very low, start the disc and raise the volume
gradually. NEVER listen to a DTS-Audio-CD through the
analog audio outputs of your CD/DVD player.
Burning Instructions
Burn them the absolute same way as you would burn any
normal Audio-CD from FLAC files.
