Re: XM radio (Karl Rehn) ISO: Sony 7-pin i/o cable (Jason Crouch)
From: Karl Rehn <rehn@arlut.utexas.edu> Subject: Re: XM radio Date: Thu, 07 Jul 2005 15:31:41 -0500 I think XM deserves a lot of credit for diversity in programming. Maybe they don't play as many Cramps shows as one poster would like but they broadcast a lot of live shows from our local South by Southwest festival, from Bonnaroo, from two recent all day festivals that Willie Nelson put on -- all live shows that certainly weren't going to show up on traditional radio. The fact that the sound quality isn't CD quality may actually be a good thing, since a lot of artists (even ones that don't normally allow taping) have been allowing XM to broadcast their performances. Bob Dylan, performing at Willie's 4th of July show, didn't let them broadcast, but basically everyone else did. While those broadcasts may not be as sweet as a DAT soundboard, I'd rather have the XM feed than an audience recording. They are also giving airplay to a lot of bands that deserve airplay but don't get it elsewhere, and even on the 'oldies' channels and the classic rock channels they dig up and play lots of rare gems and great tracks that aren't on the standard Clear Channel playlist. My only complaint is that they raised the fees on everyone to cover their losses on Opie and Anthony. Originally O&A was to be an extra pay channel, but suddenly everyone got a surcharge and O&A was a "free" channel. Karl
