Hey Joe,
If it were me I would run an omni like you said for the center channel, then
either a pair of omnis spread at about the distance of the House PA, or a
set of cardiods either X/Y or ORTF or whatever spacing works best for the
room, caps should point to just the outside of the speakers probably.
You could run all the mics directly into the house console, but if you had
some out board pre's and ADC's that would be best.
You'll need a soundcard with at least 5 inputs for a laptop, something like
a Nuendo Multiset, and a multitrack recording app. I like Steinberg's
Wavelab 5.0, but it's a bit pricey. N-Track is reasonably priced, but it
won't have some of the advanced editing features you get with a more
expensive app. You may also want something like Steinberg's Surround
Edition VST Plugins depending on your budget.
Record 5 tracks - 2 from PA (L/R), 3 from mics. Then mix them to taste. I
would put mostly SBD in the fronts, and mostly AUD in the Rears, and mix the
center channel to taste.
That should be a decent starting point anyway.

Dear dat-heads:
Been DAT taping for 10 years. Now have an opportunity to install microphones
permanently at a venue here in Northern California for surround sound
taping. Is there a guide available that can line me out on all the
specifics? Sorry, I searched the archives and didn't find anything that
helped me get going.
Here is what we have:
Sound Board Patches
2 Nak-300's
DA-20 at Sound Board
D8
Laptops
Cables, and power.
CD & DVD recorders/players
The thought is to install an omni at the center of the venue, hanging down
from the ceiling, XLR over to the sound board where my DA-20 lies. Then mix
the sound board, with possibly some X-Y microphones (but this may be
redundant). The room is about 100 feet X 100 feet, with 15 or 20 foot
ceiling. There is an elevated stage. The sound board is in the back right
hand side of the venue.
Any help on software, mixing, play back would be helpful. I've seen some of
the surround sound shows on archive.org. What we are trying to do is tape it
real time.
Thanks in advance for any guidance.

I ended up being put on the list around a year ago when terrapin tapes signed me up for a free subscription to Relix. I had not done business with TT for at least 2 years prior to that.
Personally I like the magazine and had no problem getting off the mailing list by clicking on the link at the bottom of one of the emails.
Stay Kind,

AFAIK, the membership of this list is not publicly available to
spam. If I had to guess, I'd agree w/ Seth that it's more likely
your addy was culled from tape vendors or other commercial internet
sites like Jambands.com (owned by Relix) or Jambase or the like. I
would tend to doubt someone at Relix harvests e-mails from posters to
this list.
I'd also take issue with you that this is spam. I think of spam as
the hundreds of silly messages I get each day for viaggRa and other
prescription drugs, pr0n, wareZ, phishing, nigerian 419 scams, etc.
etc. I take it you're not into the Dead, and YMMV on musical tastes,
but I think it very likely, quite frankly, that anyone who's out
there taping contemporary jam or jazz improv music, *is* interested
in many of the artists covered in Relix.
I therefore consider those ads for Relix as being directed to this
niche market of live music fans and tapers, which I would assume you
are part of as a reader of this list. You may not like getting an
extra SPAM here or there, but this isn't like totally junk
mail. It's targeted marketing of a very small, somewhat fragile
economic niche, mostly off the radar screen of mass
culture. Personally YOU may not be interested in this contemporary
music scene (maybe you trade vintage tapes, 80s' headbanger death
metal music, who knows), but a lot of people who tape NEED this niche
and the musicians and business-people involved in live
improvisational music to thrive. No bands able to survive doing
this, nothing to tape. That simple.
So, maybe it's unsolicited mail, like the paper junk mail, but I
don't agree that targeted advertising to a niche of people who have
expressed interest in some niche-y thing or had a business
relationship is spam, although perhaps Relix' automated removal could
be improved, but that doesn't make them bad people.
For all we know, they could have gotten your address from something
like Ticketmaster or Clear Channel if you buy tickets for certain
things on line or have an account on some music website. If you
registered to run a lot of marathons, would you get all steamed if
you got an occasional e-mail solicitation from, say, a running gear
company, as a rough analogy?
As a Relix subscriber (but having no other interest, except being a
friends with one of their editors as well as with another couple of
people associated w/Jambands), I'd say your characterization of the
magazine is dated and unfair. Like the Relix and Jambands sites,
these cover a lot of the current bands and scene seriously and with
good insight, certainly more clueful than the mainstream media. The
magazine hasn't been a "Deadhead" magazine for at least a half-dozen
(or more) years since Tina (forgot her last name) sold it to the
current owner, who's put a lot of resources into it and vastly
improved it from the old days.
Lastly, while no one likes spam, your complaint strikes me and
probably struck the Relix folks as kind of over the top and rude.
Your gratuitous comments about Jerry showed you were unfamiliar with
what they have been recently doing, so it was pretty easy to dismiss
your complaint as the rantings of an idiot, not a good perception
when you're asking for something. More effective to just ask
politely and skip the angry insults. (Maybe you're projecting here
and YOU need to put the bong to your lips or whatever equivalent you
need to put the matter in perspective here ;-)
I'll bcc: this to my friend at Relix though privately to make sure
that you are not further inconvenienced and receive an e-mail from
someone that you have been removed from the list.

That would be rather tricky to do without including me :-)

You'd be wrong. Spam is Unsolicited Bulk Email. Content doesn't
matter, only consent.

Accurate targeting is irrelevant.
(If Relix wanted to post a message to dat-heads offering a free
subscription, I'd consider it on-topic and not objectionable. But
that's a single message.)

As if Relix could afford what those gangs charge.

Yes, I would, and whichever marathon gave away (or sold) me email
address would get in a lot of trouble for it, too.

I've been through the same ordeal. I always wondered how I got on their
list. I have a feeling it was through an affiliate of DATHEADS (not
directly, of course. I'm sure Liam wouldn't sell namelists), but now
I've got another datum to lend credence to my theory. How many other
DATHEADS get spam from relix? I suspect that it is one of the places
I've done business with; Terrapin Tapes comes to mind for some reason
(it seems like I turned up a link to them when I first started
investigating the spam, but it may have been another blank tape dealer).

Last night I used my Sony Hi MD recorder to tape Megadeth here in Las
Vegas. Here's the info:
Megadeth Gigantour 07-22-05 Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV
MD(M) MZ-RH910 (Linear PCM)>ECM-MS907 (Master MD)
I still have to transfer the Audio to my computer but I'll get it done
today. If anyone would like to set up a trade for it feel free to
e-mail me. My only stipulation is that you must be a taper yourself
because I wanna get some good stuff in trade for this. If you're a
taper then you understand.

Hello,
i am wondering if someone is allready using DIGITAL VOICE RECORDERS.
In our digital age, the new equipment to record will be the
non-mechanical small voice recorders, i think.
I saw some of the machines in the local audio market,
CANON, PHILIPS, OLYMPUS, and toshibisha
For E90,-- that is $90,--
Audio qualtiy is not very good and it is compressed ??
Take for example Olympus WS -2005
Overall Frequency Response (ST)HQ:100-15,000Hz
HQ:100-12,000Hz/SP:100-5,000Hz/LP:100-2,000Hz
But you can record 4 hours, 20 minutes SP so that is very interesting.
I am wondering if it is possible to slow the totaal recording time
and to increase the frequence response.
You can record 4 hours, 20 minutes SP so that is very interesting.
And the machine is very small.
greetings, still, Duth Dat Taper

I have a Sony M1 portable DAT recorder for sale plus extras. I am the
original owner and is in excellent condition with less than 100 hours on
the heads. It was used for recording only with VERY little playback since
I used my DA-20 for transfers and has only seen about about 6 uses in the
last 2 years. Here's what the package includes:
- M1 DAT recorder
- leather case (I did cut a small slit in the case right where the hold
button is. It made it easier to place it in hold with the protective case
on)
- original box with packing material
- original manuals
- original 4.5v power supply
- rechargable Sony NiMH batteries with charger and power supply
- 7-pin active coax digital I/O cable (from sonicsense)
- 7-pin active optical digital I/O cable (sony)
- homemade 3 - D cell battery sled
$500 for the package.
Thanks
