From: "Gary Davis" <g@hoxnet.com> Subject: Re: Attenuator Options Reply-to: g@hoxnet.com Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 16:34:34 -0700 The trick in building your own attenuator isn't the resistor values or the circuit diagram. The trick is getting reliable connections on both ends, and in the middle. I've made home-built attenuators for many years, but I'm much happier with Len's. The only trouble I have with Len's is the 1/8" plug (the same as on CSB mics) is so solid, I have a habit of not pushing it all-the-way into the camcorder mic jack. I don't know how I make this mistake, but I've made it more than a few times. When you do this, you only get sound on one channel - which is hardly a disaster - but I recommend people double, triple check that the plug is really in all the way. Other than this issue, I really recommend people buy Len's attenuator for 1/8" plugs rather than build one yourself. For RCA-plug attenuators, (such as for taping from soundboards), I've gotten very nice ones from a car-stereo supplies catalog. They come in various amounts of attenuation, such as -3, -6, and -12dB, and of course you can stack them for additional attenuation. They are gold in color are marked "patent pending," but unfortunately, they don't have a brand name on them. --Gary
From: "Alan" <alans12@comcast.net> Subject: Re: pdaudio Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 19:58:52 -0400 Gordon, Both you and Len compare the PDAudio PLUS Mic2496 to ONLY the M-Audio. To be fair you'd have to compare their features with them both being fed a digital signal from a Mic2496, as the comparison is limited by the PDAudio's lack of analog input. In which case the M-Audio has the added benefit of analog input capability, albeit not as good as an outboard A-to-D unit. Alan =========================== From: <gidluck@alltel.net> Subject: Re: pdaudio Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 17:35:09 -0500 Scott, A few are starting to appear here... http://bt.etree.org/?search=pdaudio PDAudio is still a good option where 24-bit and a compact digital recorder is a requirement. Battery packs are available for powering for extended time periods. [snip] The suspicion is that for the price, the M-Audio unit may not have an analog section on par with the Mic2496. We don't know yet. Core Sound has indicated that the recorders may serve two different market segments. Gordon Gidluck www.gidluckmastering.com
From: "David Klein" <davidklein@canada.com> Subject: RE: attenuation options? Reply-To: <davidklein@canada.com> Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 20:20:21 -0400 This may be helpful - it's a diy variable attenuator for taking board feeds. http://tinyurl.com/8clav If you don't want adjustability there's a few good links at the bottom of the page for fixed attenuators. If you're trying to attenuate a balanced mic you'll need a different circuit. If you're trying to attenuate an unbalanced mic you might give some consideration to impedance values - again the links are useful on determining the appropriate resistor values. All are very simple circuits. david > From: "John Quays" <johnny__quays@hotmail.co.uk> > Subject: attenuation options? > Date: Mon, 08 Aug 2005 21:49:24 +0000 > > Can anyone help me with a cheap alternative to Core Sounds's -20dB > attenuator cable? > > Is there something I could buy ready-made (from Maplin or a music > shop, say) > or can anyone give me some pointers for doing it as a DIY > project? It was a great show, 2 acoustic sets, and the recording sounds very nice. Depending on the response I may have to limit the offer. And respecting Hot Tuna's and Jorma's taping policy it can't be posted for download. Drop me an email if you're interested ... Nobody has seen the unit yet, so nobody can do a fair comparison yet. From: digit@redwing.net Subject: Editing Software for Newby Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 07:31:31 -0500 (CDT) Hey all, Wondering which software program to recommend to a newby who has transferred his vinyl collection to his hard drive and now wants to insert track indexes? I use SoundForge for this but think that it would be overkill and too steep a learning curve for him. Any user friendly program out there that would allow him to accomplish such a minor task? Please reply off list and sorry about the lack of DAT content.

From: Rob DeGrado <m0e_r0n@yahoo.com> Subject: FS: MBHO603 w/caps Date: Wed, 10 Aug 2005 10:42:16 -0700 (PDT) I bought some Neumann KM100s last spring and these have been collecting dust ever since. Time to set them free! Everything listed below is in mint condition. I'd like to get $1,600.00 for the whole thing (shipped) but will break it up per price listed below. 2 - MBHO603/KA200N - These mics are NOT the actives. They are MINT condition. Matching serial numbers for bodies and caps. Purchased new from Sonic Sense in Oct 2000 and have been very well cared for. I even have the original receipt I can forward on to the new owner. The two original carrying boxes that came with them are a bit worn from my bag but the mics/caps are cherry with no scratches. Paid $1,224.00 for the pair. Asking $950.00. 2 - KA-500HN (matching serial numbers) - paid $550.00 new (Cascade Media) in Dec 2003, asking $450.00. Comes with one carrying box for the 603 body. 2 - KA-100DK - paid $300.00 used in Aug 2002, asking $300.00. __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected.
