What are your thoughts on this? Given that "way back before DAT," the recording method you describe was one that the "average audio enthusiast" could be confident would ensure reasonably high fidelity thanks to a fairly wide magnetic tape run at a higher speed (it ensured a fine legacy for Mike Millard, for example; pity he can't be here to see what he wrought) and was arguably the best archiving method available to said enthusiast until PCM transfers came along, my thoughts would be go for it. Especially if the cassettes have been well cared for and not played that often. As to the precise technical details involved in bringing these sources to the digital realm, I bow to others far more knowledgeable, who may be wont to advise you on all manner of things relating to A/D conversion and getting a bit-perfect digital signal out to a hard drive recorder. Some of them might even start by telling you to put those old VHS cassettes in the oven for a spell. Over to you, folks... ------------------------------ From: Frank Wong Subject: ISO SONY PCM M1 Remote Date: Thu, 18 Aug 2005 15:44:28 -0700 (PDT) I am looking to buy a new or used Sony PCM M1 LCD remote control. Does anyone know where I can get one ? Google didnt turn up anything. Can you use the TCD100 remote, I found one of those. But it doesnt have LCD display. Are there any other brands of 4 pin remotes I can use ? Model numbers of the remotes if you have them. I've decided to upgrade my multi-mic rig by one. These don't cost much new but at least I can put it to use if you're not... thanks, --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Gary Davis" Subject: Speaking of my multi-mic rig.... Reply-to: g@hoxnet.com Date: Fri, 19 Aug 2005 00:44:25 -0700 I used it tonight to record the "Jeff Gauthier Goatette"; came out really nice. No one on DAT Heads has ever taken me up on the offer for a free listen to these fantastic jazz recordings I've been making in Culver City. I used 3 Radio Shack PZMs on the floor for the drums, and 2 SM- 57s to close-mic the amps for the electric violin and stand-up bass, and ran a wire for the keyboard. Mixed live with a battery-powered Roland MX-5 and monitored with the Eyptomic phones + Thunder 29 hearing protector. Recorded on a Sony D8. Because the club is so close, I came home during the setbreak and started running a CD of the first set. Finished it up after the show, went back to the club and gave it to Jeff (Gauthier) the same night he played it... just to piss-off Clear Channel. --Gary ------------------------------ From: "Bob S." I have recently gotten a DVD burner that allows me to transfer VHS to DVD with the click of a button. Way back before DAT I used to record radio shows and some low gen tapes on the SP setting to very expensive VHS recorder, sound only naturally. So I'm thinking that I can easily transfer these tapes to DVD and then over to some other digital format. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks. i think its a good way to stay out of trouble and off the streets. if there is anything noteworthy, you should let us know so we can get copies. any doctor demento? peace _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
