Hi Mike,
I've used Oktava MC012 (hypercardiod elements, but also omnis) for shows
using the M-Audio Duo (USB digitizer) and the Really Nice Preamp (RNP8380)
with an Edirol R-1 24 bit recorder. I've had excellent results in small
settings and larger venues, although my favorite artist (Bruce Hornsby) is
not similar to your proposed "loud rock setting". I have not had to use
the 10 dB pad at all, but then as I said the concerts weren't *that* loud.
One note of caution if you are outside - the Oktavas are quite sensitive
to wind noise without good windscreens (I've used both the MK012-WS and
ML012-US windscreens http://sound-room.com/customer/home.php?cat=13) with
good results.
Good luck!
David
