(Not including festivals like Bonnaroo) Thanks in advance! Scott ------------------------------ From: "Roger" Subject: RE: Airplanes and Taping Gear?? Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2005 19:01:04 -0400 Hi, Shouldn't be a problem. I fly constantly and have taken taping gear along many times. The large SLA batteries catch their attention pretty quick on the x-ray machine but once they see what they are, they send them on. Not really all that encouraging as I've had a few that didn't really look at anything beyond unzipping the top of one. Expect someone to take a look in the bag and don't get bent out of shape over it. Generally speaking, I've not had a problem with goons banging my stuff around. I think the TSA is sensitive to that issue. What I have seen are wannabe Gestapo troops ordering folks around as if we are all cattle. That pisses me off and, when I have time, I ask for a supervisor. Date: Tue, 6 Sep 2005 15:53:43 -0700 (PDT) Hello After 17 years of taping shows, I finally have to get on a plane with my gear, No stand. I have a laptop bag with Mics, DAT, Preamp, all the basic stuff. Nothing Strange or too weird. Any tips for searches, security, etc. I am not trying to hide anything. I just do not want my gear messed up or abused by hired goons. I am a bit "protective" of my gear. I am going from chicago to oakland in a few weeks. Thanks for any tips. Jim ------------------------------ From: "Jeff Franzreb" Subject: Airplanes and Taping Gear?? Date: Wed, 7 Sep 2005 17:07:40 -0400 I've never had a problem. My gear is carried in a camera bag, so they first assume - video camera. So, I can explain no it's taping gear and they aren't too bad with searching. At worst they either had to swab everything or pulled stuff out and put it into two bins to slide through since the bag was packed very full. I hope that helps. Jeff ------------------------------ From: Clark Guy Subject: Airplanes and Taping Gear?? Date: Thu, 8 Sep 2005 10:34:13 -0500 HI, Jim! I've flown in and out of O'Hare and Midway with my Sony D-3 DAT recorder many times. I simply present it (and the microphones, and its lead acid external battery) to them as if it were a video camera, which they request be removed from the rest of your carry on luggage. My collapsing stand has fit diagonally in my largest suitcase, in checked luggage. So far, they've not hassled me unduly... Hope this helps! You're in for an _interesting_ day... =| Despite the existence of an FAA profile document that describes us as "Location Recordist / Taper / Music Fan" most screeners haven't read the thing, & don't have any clue as to what the usual jumble of a taping rig is all about. Stay calm, be professional, and don't loose your sense of humor - you're liable to need it. A phone call to the local FAA office might not be a bad idea. Not sure if there are more than the basic guidelines on-line, but wouldn't hurt to check. Tell them exactly what you're bringing, and see if there are any potential problems well in advance. This saved my ass when I was bringing a beta test rig that was still in bread-board stage... Looked like a mess, and was... Disconnecting the leads between the various circut boards, wrapping them separately, and boxing the components labled as "electronic test gear" as per the recommend of the local FAA office led to clear sailing and no hassles. The gear itself is usually not much of a problem for the Security screeners, but you will probably be asked to open the case, & perhaps demonstrate that the devices function, similar to the business traveler with the laptop. If you can containerize things it's sometimes better - put all the cables in one zippered bag, mics in another, & so on, so that nothing is connected. The idea is that if the gear is organized, then it's less likely to be a dangerous item. It's also easier to find if you have to do the demo thing for the screeners... _DO_NOT_ attempt to hide anything! In fact, search your own cases and make damned sure that you haven't left half of that 'space cookie' from last festival season in a side pocket, and remove any suspicion of contraband. Get rid of the spare lighter, and those fireworks as well . . . ;) Bringing along the purchase recipts (especially if they identify the piece of gear specifically as a recording deck, mic pre-amp, etc.) or manuals isn't a bad idea. The real problem seems to be the sealed lead acid battery power systems. If you have the Eco Charge or Power Sonic stuff, you should get copies of the Materials Safety Data Sheets from the manufacturer, and bring those along too. Better to have them and not need 'em, than the other way 'round... Having the MSDS for the Ecos' with me has saved my ass more than once, BTW. Home-built battery systems are often a problem, especially as they can easily resemble explosive devices to the screeners. Now would be a good time to get those loose wires into some shrink-tube, and clean up the look of the thing... While it's not illegal to carry SLA batteries as carry-on or in checked luggage on a commercial flight, I do know several folks who have been forced to toss them, arrange for separate shipping, and been hassled over these items. For some unknown reason, the external cells for laptop computers don't upset them so much, but anything unfamiliar and strange does. Go figure... If they don't know what it is, then there will be some pointed inquiry directed at you. Don't be afraid to ask to talk to the Gate Supervisor, but do not get flustered or angry. Stay calm, stay professional... Stan Smith ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ From: O'Malley Subject: Airplanes and Taping Gear?? Jim ------------------------------ From: "Lerner, David S, ALABS" Subject: Re: Jorma/Tuna Taping Date: Thu, 8 Sep 2005 13:48:54 -0500 It depends. With Tuna, taping is often allowed at most venues. As long as you don't block the center sight of the person behind the board with your mic stand. And no board patches ever. With Jorma, there is a woman (whose name I can't recall) or sometimes his wife Vanessa and you need to get their permission to tape. When I saw Jorma&Barry in June at BB King in NYC, I had to get permission to tape and there was only 1 other taper besides me. When I saw Tuna in July at Asbury Park, there were about 30 tapers and none of us asked for permission.=20 In 2004, I got stopped taping Jorma in the middle of a show. Only to be allowed to continue once they saw I held the mic in my hand as mic stands were denied entry into the theater. They actually took my gear and then gave it back to me after Vanessa saw I had no mic stand. Of course, the tape came out bad due to audience chatter and the abrupt cut when they spotted me. So if it's a Jorma show, be prepared for a request not to tape him.=20 Either way, enjoy the music. I'll see Tuna in November.
