I've been through numerous times with a backpack full of taping gear --
DAT, minidisc, tapes, discs, microphones (including a set of binaurals on a
handmade frame), PZMs, camera, etc.
It's totally a roll of the dice. I'm leaving in three weeks for Europe
again, and I'll have a laptop as well as a Theremin in my carry-on.
Hoo-hah. Can't wait to discover what my $187 in security fees per ticket
pay for this time!
Sometimes they wave me through, sometimes they try to figure out what
they're looking at, sometimes they take everything apart -- and *then* try
to figure out what they're looking at. The two most absurd checks happened
in Philadelphia and Boston.
In Philadelphia, I had three black Sony bags of recording gear inside my
backpack. The uniform set them side by side with great care. He opened the
first, took everything out, carefully examined it and asked me about it,
and put it back. He opened the second, and did the same. Then he opened the
*first* again, and examined it all and asked about it again! He totally
ignored the third. He had lost track of what he was doing within two
minutes. They took away my wife's surgical scissors from our medical kit
though, even though she had her nursing license with her.
The second absurdity was coming back into Boston with a plane change, where
we had to go back through inspection. Again, my backpack was full of tech,
and uniform #1 said to uniform #2, "check that bag!" Uniform #2 saw it on
the monitor, and went around to grab it. He carefully watched the bags come
out of the scanner and picked up a pack full of stuffed teddy bears
belonging to the woman behind me and started pulling everything out. The
Philly guy couldn't count up to three, and the Boston guy couldn't count up
to two. I put on my pack and walked away. Like with the three Sony bags, I
never, ever, *ever* talk to them. And this time they took away my wife's
*plastic* knitting needles -- even though past the inspection point they
had restaurants with *metal* silverware in Amsterdam!
Most inspections have been half-hearted stuff. The only time I really set
off nervous scurrying was bringing six small cans of maple syrup to friends
in Europe. O-my-gawd! Metal cans! It took a half hour for them to release
the baggage (it was checked baggage, too) and we ended up being the last to
board to the scowls of the rest of the passengers.
Ah, well, Have fun!
Dennis

A few years back (before 9/11), the screeners were
sure they had a live one in my carry-on. Turns out
they were keeping the country safe from the dangers of
Lee Oskar harmonicas....

Hey Now All!
I normally have to fly outta a little podunkt
airport, ACV to be exact. Talk about Gestapo!
Anyway, I have come to the conclusion that it's
easier and safer to send it Fed-ex or UPS, 2nd day in
the original box'es or my specialized cases. Have the
Airline your flying give you several ' Fragile "
stickers, if you do not have them already on, say from
the last service you had done.
Send them directly to your hotel or friends/
families house. It's a lot less stressful...HOWEVER...
If you do decide to take your equipment on the
plane, go to eco-charge's website and download the
battery certification that is Govt. approved. Again
saves a little headache.
Hope this helps,
Peace, Michael in Humboldt
